  • Utilizes specialized monitoring devices, electrodes, and other probes to accurately assess patients. Prepares for positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fittings and discusses the testing process with patients, ensuring they understand the procedure and addressing any inquiries. Provides education to both physicians and patients regarding sleep medicine.
  • Adheres to sleep protocols to establish and document baseline metrics, including body position, movements, oxygen saturation, and heart and respiratory rates. Accurately scores sleep/wake cycles and generates comprehensive reports by compiling data on sleep/wake stages and clinical events.
  • Implements necessary interventions to ensure patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness, including the administration of continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure and oxygen therapy.
  • Conducts therapeutic procedures such as auto servo ventilation (SV) titrations, average volume assured pressure support (AVAPS), multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT), and maintenance of wakefulness testing (MWT). Manages polysomnographic data acquisition while ensuring the quality of study recordings by identifying and rectifying artifacts.
  • Verifies the integrity of collected data by following wake procedures and completing the data collection process, which includes repeating physiological and instrument calibrations and guiding patients through questionnaires. Sets up video and audio monitoring systems.
  • Prepares and calibrates testing equipment to ensure proper functionality and signal quality. Maintains equipment in a clean and operational state, identifies minor malfunctions, and reports major repair needs. Monitors supply levels and ensures the availability of necessary equipment.
  • Reviews new patient orders and addresses inquiries with the medical director. Processes charges for patient visits and sleep studies.
  • Engages in quality improvement initiatives or cost containment projects, committees, task forces, community events, or educational programs for physicians. Promotes and develops sleep health programs through presentations and resource development. Participates in competency enhancement activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills essential for providing age-appropriate care to patients. Understands the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess and interpret data relevant to each patient's age-specific needs, ensuring care aligns with departmental policies.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association (AHA), and
  • Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) registration from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT), or
  • Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) certification from the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), or
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialty (RRT-SDS) certification from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Education Required:

  • Advanced training beyond high school, including completion of an accredited or approved program.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires five years of experience in a polysomnographic technician capacity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Proficient in sleep study scoring.
  • Adept at analyzing complex situations and applying relevant policies.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • May require travel between sites, exposing the incumbent to road hazards.
  • Operates all necessary equipment to perform job functions.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while also standing and walking as needed.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist and up to 20 lbs. overhead, as well as carrying up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards, necessitating the use of protective clothing as required.
