Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Teacher of the Visually Impaired to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing vision impaired services, including assessments, intervention, and evaluations to students with disabilities. You will work closely with students, parents, and staff to understand the unique educational needs of each visually impaired student and provide support to ensure their success.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide vision impaired services, including assessments, intervention, and evaluations to students with disabilities.
  • Assist students, parents, and staff in understanding the unique educational needs of each visually impaired student.
  • Identify support that is available for visually impaired students and provide resources to help them succeed.
  • Interpret medical eye reports as they relate to educational environments and contribute to the development of the IEP with recommendations for goals, modifications, and learning styles.
  • Implement technical skills for the visually impaired, including reading and teaching Braille, utilizing and teaching Abacus, and teaching students to use appropriate low vision aids and tools to maximize their functional vision.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, parents, school district personnel, and outside agencies to coordinate services and provide modified materials to team members.
  • Provide braille, recorded/enlarged materials, and tactile symbols as appropriate for each child and assist school personnel in making environmental adjustments for the student within the schools.
  • Use data from interventions to determine eligibility for special education services, appropriate instructional practices, and access to general curriculum.
  • Develop IEP goals to meet individual needs and maintain complete student files for all students enrolled for service.
  • Comply with all ETR and IEP timelines and guidelines according to Ohio's Operating Standards.
Requirements:
  • Valid Ohio Teacher of the Visually Impaired License.
  • Knowledge of current assessment tools, ETR and IEP processes, IDEA rules and regulations, and best practices for the provision of vision impaired services for children in their least restrictive environment.
  • Working knowledge of Braille (Grade 1 and 2) and knowledge of how to teach Braille, knowledge of abacus (and ability to teach multiple methods), knowledge of electronic devices including: Braille and other specialized note takers (Pac mate, Braille Note, etc.), comfort and skill in teaching functional daily living experiences, familiarity with low vision tools, and knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in written form.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license and access to personal insured vehicle during business hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population of students, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work/operate as a team member.
  • History of excellent job attendance.
  • Must pass criminal background checks and be free from communicable diseases.
