Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the Department of Transportation as a Supervisory Attorney. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing legal counsel and advice on administrative law matters, mentoring and training entry-level to mid-level attorneys, and providing leadership and authoritative legal expertise in the review of policy documents, plans, programs, policies, or projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing legal counsel and advice on administrative law matters
  • Mentoring and training entry-level to mid-level attorneys
  • Providing leadership and authoritative legal expertise in the review of policy documents, plans, programs, policies, or projects
  • Representing the agency and the Chief Counsel in meetings, public hearings, and before administrative forums and the courts
  • Drafting legal opinions and interpretations on relevant statutes and agency rules for use within the agency and by members of the public
  • Briefing senior leadership on emerging legal issues related to regulation law matters
  • Managing and supervising a team of attorneys, including assigning work, reviewing work-product, exercising quality control, providing technical legal guidance and training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating disciplinary action
  • Developing and executing plans, setting priorities and performance metrics, approving leave, taking, recommending or approving corrective/disciplinary actions, defining and organizing staff and work, and identifying and evaluating opportunities for operational efficiencies and/or cost savings
Requirements
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Must submit an SF50
  • Designated or Random Drug Testing required
  • Positive education requirement: Applicants must submit a copy of their college or university transcripts(s) and certificates by the closing date of announcement to verify qualifications
Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year (52 weeks) of SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE equivalent to the FV-J/K or GS-14/15 level. This experience is typically related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the position.

The specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience providing legal counsel and advice on administrative law matters; and Experience mentoring and training entry-level to mid-level attorneys; providing leadership and authoritative legal expertise in the review of policy documents, plans, programs, policies, or projects; and providing advice and counsel to executives, senior managers, or senior policymakers in a legal or professional environment.
