Job Title: Assistant Lab Director

The City and County of San Francisco's Department of Public Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Lab Director to join our team. As a key member of our Public Health Laboratory, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest quality laboratory testing and services for our community.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Lab Director will be responsible for supervising quality assurance at the Public Health Laboratory, providing laboratory consultation to other units within the Department of Public Health, and serving as a technical supervisor for laboratory testing. This position will also perform high complexity laboratory testing, prepare reports, publications, and presentations on behalf of the Public Health Laboratory, and design and implement new testing procedures and experiments.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise quality assurance at the Public Health Laboratory
  • Provide laboratory consultation to other units within the Department of Public Health
  • Serve as a technical supervisor for laboratory testing
  • Perform high complexity laboratory testing
  • Prepare reports, publications, and presentations on behalf of the Public Health Laboratory
  • Design and implement new testing procedures and experiments
  • Train and assist with supervision of subordinate laboratory staff
  • Identify and develop applications for grants and other funding opportunities related to research and development
Requirements:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in medical or public health microbiology from an accredited college or university
  • Four (4) years of professional experience as a researcher or scientist in a clinical, research, or public health laboratory setting
  • A current, valid California Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) certificate
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in developing power points for presentations at professional conferences
  • PhD, DrPH in molecular biology, microbiology, or a closely related field
  • Certification as a High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD) from the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB)
  • Professional experience as a Public Health Microbiologist
  • Experience developing molecular assays, verification/validations and sequencing using automated (Clear Lab) sequencing and data analysis using Terra pipeline
  • Experience in submission of sequences to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
