Summary:


The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) plays a crucial role in delivering patient care during transport between facilities within Catholic Health Service. This position entails responding to emergency calls and providing essential medical services to individuals in urgent need.

The EMT-A is responsible for the safe operation of emergency vehicles, ensuring the timely delivery of medical personnel to the scene and transporting patients to healthcare facilities.

Certified as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, the incumbent will execute lifesaving procedures and assist emergency responders effectively. The EMT-A will also maintain the operational readiness of emergency vehicles and related equipment.

In addition to driving and assisting on-site, the EMT-A will perform clerical tasks and ensure the upkeep of vehicles, supplies, and medical instruments. Supervision will be provided by the EMT-Paramedic, and this role does not typically involve overseeing other staff members. The EMT-A will undertake all related responsibilities as necessary.


Typical Responsibilities:

  • Drive the ambulance to designated locations, following dispatcher instructions.
  • Administer first aid and life support to patients in prehospital settings.
  • Assess the severity of illnesses or injuries to prioritize medical interventions.
  • Participate in training to maintain licensure and stay updated on industry advancements.
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to patients during transport.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and treatment center personnel regarding patient status.
  • Coordinate with other emergency medical team members and public safety personnel.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and readiness of the ambulance following patient treatment.
  • Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures during transport.
  • Plan and evaluate individualized patient care based on assessments.

Qualifications:

Education:
High school diploma or GED
Current NYS Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced certification
Current New York State driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
Certifications in CPR, PALS (or equivalent), ITLS (or equivalent)
Certifications in NIHSS, Hazwhopper, ICS 100, 200HC, 700 & 800 preferred, or required within six (6) months of employment

Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical experience in a prehospital environment

Skills and Abilities:
  • Deliver high-quality patient care while adhering to established protocols.
  • Respond to emergency medical requests and communicate patient conditions to medical staff.
  • Expertise in patient handling and movement techniques.
  • Administer emergency medications and perform intravenous procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and complete necessary documentation.
  • Ensure the ambulance is fully stocked and operational throughout the shift.
  • Report mechanical issues and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
  • Comply with continuing education requirements and maintain all relevant certifications.
  • Act as a representative of the organization when interacting with other facilities and agencies.
