Job Overview

The Public Safety Dispatch Center serves as the central hub for all communications related to police and fire services. The role of the Public Safety Dispatcher is crucial in managing both incoming and outgoing communications, as well as assisting with in-person inquiries and written correspondence. This position is primarily responsible for the timely deployment of public safety personnel and resources in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Hiring Process: The selection process for this role includes a comprehensive review of applications and resumes, a written assessment, an in-person interview, a thorough background check, a polygraph test, and a medical evaluation that includes drug screening. The entire hiring process may take several months. Candidates who are not selected may reapply for future openings and will be treated as new applicants unless formally notified of disqualification.

Position Details: This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a rotating shift schedule. Compensation ranges from $22.03 to $31.82 per hour. The position remains open until filled.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain familiarity with departmental protocols regarding radio and communication equipment, ensuring accurate operation of computerized and manual call systems.
  2. Respond promptly and professionally to all incoming calls, assisting individuals in a calm and courteous manner.
  3. Coordinate activities of police, fire, and ambulance services at various emergency scenes.
  4. Dispatch necessary emergency units as required.
  5. Assess medical emergencies and provide appropriate assistance based on training and established procedures.
  6. Be well-versed in emergency protocols to ensure immediate activation when needed.
  7. Develop a comprehensive understanding of local geography to enhance dispatch accuracy and efficiency.
  8. Manage the dispatch of security and emergency alerts, ensuring appropriate response teams are mobilized.
  9. Keep dispatched personnel informed of critical information affecting their safety and operational efficiency.
  10. Notify the Shift Commander if communication with an officer on patrol cannot be established in a reasonable timeframe.
  11. Monitor surveillance systems to maintain security and oversee individuals in custody.
  12. Disseminate relevant police information regarding wanted individuals, stolen vehicles, and missing persons.
  13. Assist the public with inquiries at Police Headquarters.
  14. Recall off-duty personnel as necessary during significant incidents.
  15. Report any deployment of officers outside their assigned sectors to the appropriate command staff.
  16. Ensure all communication equipment is functioning properly and report any issues immediately.
  17. Document significant communications and maintain an accurate daily log of events.
  18. Clarify departmental policies to the public regarding police services.
  19. Redirect calls for service to the appropriate jurisdiction when necessary.
  20. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED. A two- or four-year degree from an accredited institution is preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Candidates should demonstrate the ability to operate complex communication systems under pressure, prioritize emergency situations effectively, and maintain composure in stressful environments. Knowledge of local geography and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively are essential. Candidates must also exhibit emotional stability, confidentiality, and the capacity to think critically in emergencies.
