Position Summary: This role entails the evaluation and recommendation of actions concerning credit assessments, property evaluations, and legal documentation. Familiarity with the statutes, regulations, guidelines, and policies governing multifamily loan qualifications is essential.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Multifamily Underwriting Manager.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates under limited supervision and may involve complex loan submissions and specialized projects, in addition to routine underwriting tasks. It is classified as an intermediate level underwriter within the Multi-Family Underwriting section.
SUPERVISION: Nonexempt, nonsupervisory role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the Multi-Family Loan Purchase Program, assess loan submission requests, including credit and appraisal evaluations of collateral. Formulate recommendations for acceptance or denial based on established criteria.
2. Process a variety of multifamily loan applications through the Direct Lending program, from application receipt to closing, determining acceptance or denial based on established criteria.
3. Present loan proposals and recommendations to the loan committee.
4. Review Loan Commitment Contracts to ensure all conditions are satisfied prior to funding or closing. Collaborate with lenders and borrowers to fulfill outstanding requirements promptly.
5. Engage with borrowers, attorneys, lenders, and title companies to facilitate loan funding and closing in compliance with departmental standards.
6. Ensure the completeness and accuracy of closing documents and compliance with Loan Commitment Contracts. Prepare documentation for loan file purchases and submit to the Servicing Department.
7. Maintain accurate records of loan files for Multi-Family loan programs, including electronic database management and document scanning.
8. Attend meetings and seminars to inform lenders and the public about available multifamily loan options, eligibility requirements, and application procedures.
9. Manage heavy communication with the public and lenders to address program and underwriting inquiries.
10. Draft recommendations, reports, and correspondence, and assist in program development as needed.
11. Provide training to lending partners in multifamily underwriting as required.
12. Contribute to the maintenance and revision of the Seller's Guide and assist in the development of new loan programs.
13. Perform additional duties as necessary.
Multi-Family Underwriter II:
This role may involve assisting the Director of Mortgage Operations in the absence of the supervisor, including workflow coordination, training of junior staff, and monitoring compliance with policies and procedures.
Presentations to the Loan Committee, Executive Loan Committee, and Board of Directors may also be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: Multifamily lending practices, including credit assessments, appraisal evaluations, and relevant statutes and regulations.
Skills and Abilities: Effective planning, organization, and management of workflow; data analysis and evaluation; clear written communication; public sector engagement; and collaborative work with both internal and external stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in business, finance, banking, economics, or a related field, coupled with three or more years of mortgage lending experience. Experience should encompass mortgage underwriting, loan processing, and closing activities.
