About the Role

Cornell University is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a Public Safety Ambassador. This role is a critical part of our Public Safety Division, responsible for providing safety, security, and customer service across the Ithaca campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide safety and security services to the campus community, including patrolling designated areas, reporting suspicious or hazardous situations, and providing assistance to guests and community members.
  • Work collaboratively with Public Safety Division partners to provide critical static security for high-profile events, such as sporting events and student events.
  • Participate in the planning for critical incidents and play important roles in any campus-wide emergencies.
  • Be on call to respond to emergency situations, ensuring scene safety and providing traffic control as needed.
  • Work in integrated response teams with other campus departments, including Cornell University EMS, Environment Health & Safety, Student and Campus Life, and the Cornell University Police Department.
  • Be available for work assignments outside regularly scheduled shifts, including security for special events, athletic contests, and staffing shortages.
  • Foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences, being cooperative and collaborative, and showing respect, compassion, and empathy.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED and 1-2 years of relevant experience and education.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends for additional work assignments outside regularly scheduled shifts.
  • Valid NYS driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain background checks and meet physical requirements.
  • NYS Security Guard License.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.
  • Interpersonal skills, customer service orientation, flexibility, and effective communication.
  • Ability to manage emergency situations in a calm and logical manner.
  • Understanding of safety codes, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct security patrols without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make quick decisions.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of relevant security experience.
  • Familiarity with the university context.
  • Knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations.
