Department: Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC)

Supervision: None

Employment Status: Full-Time, Temporary

General Purpose:

The Teacher Apprentice will engage in the Clare Swan Early Learning Center's Teacher Training initiative aimed at equipping and guiding individuals aspiring to build careers in Early Childhood Education. This role involves working towards obtaining the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential through active participation in direct instructional activities and practical classroom experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill all CDA Council requirements to secure the Child Development Associate Credential, which includes completing 120 hours of direct instruction, 480 hours of classroom experience, assembling a professional portfolio, undergoing an observation with a local professional development specialist, and passing an examination.
  • Assist educators in organizing individual and group learning sessions.
  • Facilitate children’s engagement in age-appropriate educational activities across various developmental domains, including social/emotional, cognitive, literacy and language, as well as gross and fine motor skills.
  • Support the implementation of effective strategies to ensure a well-functioning classroom environment conducive to individual growth.
  • Gain an understanding of basic child assessment techniques, educational reporting to parents, and the creation of individualized care plans for children.
  • Maintain consistent attendance to ensure progress within the training program.
  • Actively participate in discussions during instructional hours.
  • Engage in program activities for children, both individually and in group settings as required.
  • Handle confidential information with the utmost sensitivity.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to comprehend and apply direct instructional methods in a classroom setting.
  • Capability to foster a sense of security and trust among infants, toddlers, and preschoolers through warmth, support, and the establishment of nurturing relationships.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; adept at presenting information and responding to inquiries effectively and sensitively.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team in a constructive manner.
  • Capacity to maintain composure in a dynamic and sometimes challenging work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service abilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Aptitude for coordinating multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to make informed decisions and exercise sound judgment.
  • Familiarity with essential classroom technology and programs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old and possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Submission of a current Health Report is required.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of state and federal background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian communities.
  • Encouragement for former or current Head Start parents to apply.

Work Environment:

This role may require lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs intermittently, standing for extended periods, and engaging in activities that involve bending and stooping. Daily exposure to various weather conditions is expected.
