Overview of the Position:

The role of a legal research associate involves engaging in professional legal tasks for the Honorable Gregory Bonilla within the 9th Judicial District of Montana. This position may lead to a transition to senior legal research status after two years of service.

Responsibilities include conducting thorough legal research and performing various clerical and administrative duties in the preparation of legal documents, opinions, and orders for the presiding judge. The work is carried out under the general oversight of the judge and is subject to evaluation through discussions and written reports.

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts comprehensive reviews, studies, and annotations of laws, judicial decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and relevant legal sources. Drafts legal briefs, memoranda, statements of issues, and preliminary opinions and orders, providing insightful recommendations to the judge. Gathers and compiles references on legal statutes and case law essential for judicial determinations. Engages in discussions with the judge regarding legal inquiries, theories, document interpretations, and order preparations. Attends court proceedings to observe testimonies and record pertinent case information; maintains accurate records related to court activities; assists the judge in formulating jury instructions. May undertake courtroom responsibilities, including documenting court testimonies or arguments and providing support services. May be required to transcribe court proceedings as necessary. May oversee the maintenance of a legal library collection.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with general legal principles, state laws, established precedents, and legal reference sources. Understanding of trial court practices, regulations, and procedures. Proficient in clear and concise communication, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse audience. Capable of researching intricate legal issues and applying relevant legal principles. Represents the court with dignity and respect. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues. Ability to transcribe audio recordings when required. Proficient in using computers with word processing and legal research software. Skilled in operating electronic recording devices for court proceedings.

Work Environment:

The position is primarily office-based or courtroom-oriented.

Physical Requirements:

The role is predominantly sedentary, with occasional requirements for walking, standing, bending, and lifting items up to 25 pounds, such as documents and files. Some roles may necessitate extended periods of sitting, standing, or computer usage, and may involve using a ladder to access files stored at height.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

A Juris Doctorate is mandatory. Experience in legal research is essential. Strong writing abilities are required.
