Job Summary


The Orange County Department of Education is seeking a committed and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of Teacher, Special Education (Mild/Moderate) within the Division of Alternative Education.

OCDE's Special Education Department is focused on fostering a safe and healthy learning environment.

Students are provided with an enriching academic experience that promotes self-motivation, accountability, competence, relevant work skills, and positive relationships, all contributing to their self-esteem and enabling them to become active members of society.

Each administrative division utilizes the professional services of this department to ensure that students have every opportunity to thrive and succeed.


Essential Functions/Duties:

  • Develop Individual Educational Programs (IEPs) and deliver educational services in alignment with students' IEPs.
  • Instruct special education students in academic and functional academic skills, communication, self-help, social-emotional skills, vocational training, and other specialized areas.
  • Create and present lesson plans, reinforce concepts, respond to inquiries, assign and review work, and document student progress.
  • Accompany and supervise students during community-based instructional outings, work programs, and field trips.
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents, caregivers, and external service providers regarding each student's educational plan.
  • Keep accurate records of student academic and behavioral data.
  • Oversee students during lunch, recess, field trips, and bus loading/unloading.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and grooming tasks, including toileting, diapering, eating, dressing, and other self-care skills.
  • Manage student behavior using positive behavioral strategies and implement Behavior Intervention Plans. This recruitment will fill current vacancies and establish an eligibility list for Teacher, Special Education (Mild/Moderate).

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements:

  • A valid California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in Special Education for students with mild/moderate disabilities.
  • Authorization to provide instruction for ELD and SDAIE to English learners.
  • The selected candidate may be required to undergo additional employment clearances, such as probation clearance, as part of the hiring process.
