Overview

The role involves performing skilled manual tasks related to the installation, upkeep, and repair of various types of insulation or protective coverings for piping systems, fittings, valves, and mechanical apparatus.

Key Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are essential to this position and may not encompass all duties associated with the role. The nature of the work allows for a variety of tasks that may be assigned as needed.

  • Execute skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of insulation or protective coverings for pipes, fittings, valves, and mechanical systems.
  • Prepare insulation materials by mixing or other methods; cut, fit, and apply materials as necessary.
  • Secure insulation with paper and canvas; adhere or sew canvas in place; and band pipe coverings using metal wire or straps.
  • Conduct all work safely and in compliance with established safety protocols.
  • Set up and take down ladders and scaffolding as required.

Additional Duties

  • Maintain responsibility for the care and custody of all tools used in insulation work.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

The position may involve exposure to various mechanical equipment, loud noises, and potentially harmful odors. Work may be conducted in diverse weather conditions and confined spaces within the facility.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of insulation materials and protective coatings used in mechanical applications.
  • Strong understanding of occupational hazards and safety measures, particularly regarding the handling of materials containing asbestos.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining the tools and equipment pertinent to the trade.
  • Capability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should have graduated from a standard high school or possess an equivalent qualification, along with completion of an approved apprenticeship in pipe covering, or a comparable mix of experience and training.

Substitution Policy

Additional relevant experience may be considered as a substitute for the required educational background on a year-for-year basis.
