Job Summary:

To provide a healthy and supportive learning environment for students, the School Nurse RN Float will play a vital role in minimizing absenteeism due to illness and promoting overall well-being in the school community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fiscal Responsibility:
    • Efficiently manage supplies and equipment, streamlining processes to reduce waste and promote cost savings.
    • Complete duties in a timely manner, managing and documenting scheduled hours according to established practice.
    • Attend education sessions as scheduled and complete documentation per procedure.
  • Quality:
    • Provide quality triage, treatment, or first aid for students who are ill or injured, enhancing existing quality medical and health educational experiences.
    • Interpret, implement, and document quality measures per Indiana State Board of Health specific standards, remaining up-to-date with policy changes and standards of care.
    • Possess critical thinking, a positive attitude, the ability to multitask, and appropriately delegate.
    • Streamline processes, focusing on the student experience.
    • Create Individualized Healthcare Plans when student health warrants.
  • Patient Satisfaction:
    • Demonstrate excellent, effective verbal, written, and non-verbal communication and non-judgmental posture with students, school staff, and parents in practice and conferences.
    • Practice professional use of personal electronic devices in care areas, maintaining privacy and confidentiality at all times.
    • Present a genuine care and concern for all students, meeting specific healthcare needs of the students in assigned buildings.
    • Facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning.
  • Patient Safety:
    • Practice safety practices in accordance with universal precautions in provision of care, fall prevention, safe patient mobilization with proper body mechanics, and measures, interpreting and applying vital signs to health assessment.
    • Practice safe medication administration, using 2 patient identifiers with all procedures, and maintaining accurate and complete records.
    • Maintain knowledge of current pharmacology.
    • Provide student and parent education when indicated, ensuring mandated immunizations/testing is complete and documented annually.
    • Disseminate information and training specific to student health to school personnel who have legitimate educational interest per regulation.
    • Implement established protocols as approved by the medical director based on identified criteria.
  • Professional Growth:
    • Maintain competency by subbing on a routine basis.
    • Demonstrate leadership and exemplary behavior as an adult role model for students and a resource for school staff.
    • Participate in AIM high and/or participate in professional organization activities and/or be an active council member.
    • Attend conferences, in-services, webinars, seminars, and read journal articles related to school and/or public health.
  • Customer Service:
    • Meet identified customer service standards, address ethical issues, and understand and demonstrate HRH's nursing mission, vision, values, and philosophy.
    • Exhibit excellent guest relations to students, parents, visitors, co-workers, physicians, interact with the public, and promote collegial relationships with school principal and administrative personnel.
    • Provide holistic, competent care to students of all age groups and diverse populations.
    • Foster relationships with future healthcare students and education programs.
    • Provide a professional and quiet patient environment.
    • Perform clinical procedures under the scope of license with MD order or protocol.
Education and Experience Required:
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with an Associate in Nursing Degree required. Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN) preferred or required with 5 years of hire date.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in the health field relating to school-age children and/or previous experience in school nursing preferred.
  • BLS and computer skills required.
  • Area-specific required education may be obtained upon hire and is to be maintained.
Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nurses' Registration and Nursing Education as an active Registered Nurse
