Job Description

The Visiting Research Fellowship program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is a unique opportunity for recent graduates of a bachelor's or master's program, or a 2-year degree in a STEM field, to gain hands-on experience in the biorenewables and bioeconomy sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide specialized skills and knowledge to research projects, including contractual, grant-funded, sponsored, and self-initiated projects at the Center.
  • Gain experience through hands-on assignments in the following categories:
    • Process instrumentation & controls installation, programming, and troubleshooting
    • Installation of mechanical systems: metal working, piping systems, electrical enclosure fabrication, etc.
    • Contact with equipment providers to source items needed for research trials in the pilot plant
    • Operation of bioreactors, ranging in scale from 5 liter to 22,000-liter volume
    • Troubleshooting and maintenance of bioreactors and fermentation-related equipment
    • Project design, implementation, and project management
    • Data collection, analysis, and reporting
    • Revising and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Communications with internal, interdisciplinary teams as well as industry clients, academic collaborators, and external stakeholders
Requirements:
  • Recent graduates of a bachelor's or master's program, or a 2-year degree in a STEM field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Benefits:
  • Funded through a Foundation Account, sponsored by the Illinois Corn Growers Association
  • Salary: $30,628 for a nine-month appointment
