Position Overview:
The Animal Care Specialist plays a vital role in the operations of Falls Road Animal Hospital by delivering high-quality veterinary assistance and outstanding service to our animal patients and their owners.
Key responsibilities encompass delivering patient care through assessing animal needs, performing examinations and diagnostic tests, assisting in surgical procedures, providing nursing support, ensuring proper feeding and care of patients, managing medical supplies and equipment, overseeing patient triage and discharge, and maintaining accurate medical records.
Core Responsibilities:
Assess animal needs by conducting thorough examinations, engaging with pet owners, reviewing care plans and records, and executing laboratory tests and imaging studies.
Facilitate patient examinations and surgical operations by preparing necessary supplies and instruments, escorting and securing patients in examination areas, and providing restraint as directed by the veterinarian.
Deliver exceptional pet care by utilizing comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and specialized equipment usage.
Ensure patients have access to food and water, maintain cleanliness in patient areas, and observe animals for any clinical signs of illness.
Uphold a safe and humane environment by sterilizing instruments, sanitizing treatment areas, managing sterile supplies, and adhering to legal regulations.
Communicate effectively with pet owners regarding patient status as directed by the veterinarian.
Maintain equipment by adhering to operating protocols, troubleshooting issues, and performing preventive maintenance.
Manage inventory by placing orders for necessary supplies and ensuring accurate record-keeping.
Enhance professional knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities and reviewing veterinary literature.
Release animals to their owners as directed, ensuring each pet is clean and properly groomed prior to discharge.
Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Additional Responsibilities:
Emergency Care
Assist veterinarians with various emergency procedures and critical care situations.
Monitor vital signs, place catheters, and perform radiographic imaging.
Clean wounds and apply necessary bandages or casts.
Administer injections and collect blood samples.
May be required to be on call for intensive care situations.

Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
A minimum of two years of experience in veterinary care, including appointments, surgeries, and nursing for hospitalized and critical patients.
Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, or LVMT) is preferred, or as mandated by state regulations.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Comfortable working with a variety of animal species
Knowledgeable in the preparation, monitoring, and recovery of pets undergoing surgical procedures, as well as basic nursing care.
Able to demonstrate proper techniques in catheter placement, blood collection, emergency care, and radiology.
Understand and mitigate risks associated with animal handling and potential injuries.
Capable of safely restraining patients according to established protocols.
Assist in prescription filling and monitoring sedation as directed by the veterinarian.
Ability to work with or around sick animals, hazardous materials, and unpleasant odors.
Approach job responsibilities in a professional and mature manner.
Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including availability for weekends and holidays.
This role involves physical demands such as lifting, cleaning, and active movement throughout the day.
Tasks may require extended periods of standing, walking, or working at a desk.
Occasional lifting or carrying of moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds) may be required.
