Position Overview
Under the guidance of the Underwriting Manager or Division Manager, the Senior Underwriter will engage in the evaluation and analysis of underwriting data to assess whether risks align with corporate underwriting standards. Responsibilities include calculating appropriate premiums, establishing terms for acceptable risks, and communicating with brokers regarding risks that do not meet underwriting criteria.

- Enhance understanding of essential insurance concepts through on-the-job training and self-study.
- Review submissions, analyze exposures, price accounts, and complete necessary documentation.
- Make informed decisions to accept, modify, or reject risks.
- Achieve assigned premium, loss ratio, and service objectives.
- Ensure accuracy in issued policies and manage policy maintenance tasks.
- Prepare renewal files for quoting and review upcoming renewal applications.
- Begin to cultivate relationships with key wholesale broker clients.
- Travel with an experienced Underwriter to meet with brokers as performance allows.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Aptitude for assessing risk effectively.
- Ability to pursue professional designations or relevant coursework within the first year of employment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Capability to work independently or collaboratively to meet assignment requirements.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency in multitasking.
- High initiative and motivation.
- Solid customer service and relationship-building skills.
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet research.
- Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Industry-related courses or certifications preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of underwriting experience, ideally in Excess and Surplus lines.
- Encouraged to pursue professional designations or continuing education.
- Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines.
