Position Overview:
The Culvert Assessment Specialist operates within a team of two to evaluate the condition of small drainage structures within the district. The incumbent will be tasked with inspecting these structures, assessing their condition, and documenting asset data using tablets. This role also includes snow removal duties during winter months, and the successful candidate will be required to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of hire. Training will be provided for both aspects of the position, and prior experience is not necessary. The ideal candidate should be capable of working independently or collaboratively in a small team and possess self-motivation.
Compensation:
The starting hourly wage for this position is competitive and may vary based on education and experience.
CDL Incentives:
Candidates who already possess a valid CDL will receive an additional hourly wage. Those without a CDL will have 90 days to obtain one, with training provided by INDOT, and will receive the additional hourly wage upon successful completion.
Work Location:
This position is based in the INDOT district.
Daily Responsibilities:
The essential functions of this role include:
- Adhering to all safety policies and procedures set forth by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
- Operating basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and rights-of-way.
- Performing winter operations tasks, including snow and ice removal.
- Engaging in emergency response activities such as clean-up, traffic control, and placement of signs.
- Conducting regular inspections and routine maintenance on equipment.
- Documenting job-related tasks in the Work Management System (WMS).
- Maintaining and installing traffic signs and pavement markings.
- Coordinating with supervisors to ensure necessary materials and equipment are available.
- Providing feedback on employee matters to supervisors.
Additional duties may include:
Asset Inspection:
- Conducting visual and physical inspections of INDOT-owned assets to evaluate maintenance needs.
- Utilizing inspection equipment to assess the condition and operation of small culvert assets.
Bridge Maintenance Specialist:
- Operating specialized equipment for the maintenance and inspection of bridge structures.
- Addressing complaints related to bridges and large culverts and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions.
Additional Roles:
- Heavy Equipment Operator: Operating various types of heavy equipment and performing maintenance on machinery.
- Herbicide Applicator: Operating and calibrating herbicide application equipment and maintaining records of applications.
- Indiana Department of Corrections (DOC) Coordinator: Transporting DOC individuals and overseeing their work.
- Shared Workforce: Supporting construction projects and performing material sampling.

Qualifications for Success:
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.

- General knowledge of highway guidelines and regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to interpret technical documents.
- Physical capability to lift 50 pounds and perform various physical activities.
- Willingness to work in varying weather conditions.
