Carastar Health is a leading provider of mental health services, and we are seeking a skilled Peer Support Specialist - Youth Recovery Coach to join our team.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a dedicated individual to provide peer support to youth aged 10-21 who experience serious emotional disturbance or serious mental illness. As a Peer Support Specialist - Youth Recovery Coach, you will use your personal experience to help youth build trusting relationships and promote personal responsibility for recovery.

About the Role:

This is a responsible position that requires a strong understanding of recovery from serious mental illness and serious emotional disturbance. You will work with youth to identify their strengths and supports, and help them develop wellness tools and coping skills. You will also facilitate peer support groups and provide resources and educational materials to help youth understand services and treatment expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support to youth aged 10-21 through strategic sharing of lived experiences and building trusting relationships.
  • Promote a service culture of respect, wellness, dignity, and strength by changing labels and viewing young people as individuals who can achieve full, rich lives on their own terms.
  • Facilitate the process for youth in exploring strengths and supports of wellness/resiliency/recovery and supporting the youth/family voice and choice in activities such as self-advocating for needs/preferences.
  • Assist youth in identifying tools of wellness/resiliency/recovery available in everyday life and creating opportunities and dialogues to explore mental health and wellness.
  • Listen to youth and family needs from a peer perspective and offer suggestions and alternatives for youth engagement in planning and self-direction process.
  • Document all interventions provided in Electronic Health Record in accordance with agency, Medicaid, and Alabama Department of Mental Health standards.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., psychology, social work) or equivalent experience.
  • Personal experience with children's mental health systems through either a serious emotional disturbance or a serious mental illness.
  • Understanding of recovery from serious mental illness and serious emotional disturbance.
  • Demonstrated resilience developed by personal lived experience.
  • Basic knowledge of mental health conditions and treatment services and/or recovery support services available to youth and families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.
  • Ability to work a set schedule and be flexible to the needs of youth/families served.
