Overview:

This is a uniformed role at all times. The Armed Security Specialist's responsibilities encompass acting as a visible deterrent to unlawful activities, ensuring the safety of patients, staff, and visitors, as well as safeguarding and monitoring hospital facilities, assets, and grounds as designated. The Armed Security Specialist is tasked with responding to all emergency alerts, managing internal and external crisis situations as required, conducting initial investigations of reported incidents, and executing other security-related duties as assigned by a security supervisor or manager. Flexibility in work hours is essential, including the ability to rotate between different facilities and travel as necessary. CHRISTUS-approved uniforms must be worn in compliance with dress code standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meets the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Self-Leadership, Leadership of Others, or Leadership of Leaders.
  • Conducts regular security patrols of the premises and surrounding areas as assigned.
  • Identifies and reports patterns related to security concerns, providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Collects initial information for incident reports, ensuring proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation, documenting only factual information, and submitting reports promptly (no later than the end of the assigned shift).
  • Responds swiftly to all service requests communicated by supervisors, via telephone, email, radio, or other means, in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Handles the collection, inventory, and return of lost and found items, patient valuables, medications, and personal belongings in accordance with established policies.
  • Enforces all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of CHRISTUS Health and applicable state laws.
  • Manages and enforces facility parking regulations through patrols, issuing violation warnings, towing, booting, and explaining rules as necessary.
  • Assists clinical and non-clinical staff with managing combative patients or visitors.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform assigned client care responsibilities in a manner that addresses the age-specific and developmental needs of individuals served by the department.
  • Exhibits proficiency and knowledge in operating the Attendant Console, Paging System, security radio/dispatch system, Digital Video Recorder (NVR) security monitors (CCTV), and the general overhead paging system.
  • Must be adept with a PC to create electronic daily activity security reports, incident reports, emails, and other relevant electronic communications during the performance of duties.
  • Promotes a safe environment by reporting safety hazards observed (e.g., broken water/sprinkler lines, burned-out lighting, smoke/gas odors, tripping hazards) during security rounds.
  • Adapts assigned client assessments, treatment, and/or care methods to meet the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each individual served.
  • Demonstrates competence with firearms, handcuffs, batons, non-crisis intervention techniques, and two-way radios.
  • Frequently encounters aggressive behavior and emotionally charged situations.
  • Occasionally faces hazardous conditions such as fires, chemical spills, and flooding.
  • Experiences frequent exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Engages in prolonged periods of walking, standing, stooping, and lifting.
  • Must maintain physical fitness to navigate all areas of the facilities and grounds, assist nursing staff with lifting patients of all sizes, and restrain individuals when necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must remain mentally alert at all times.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to make immediate decisions regarding laws, policies, and procedures is necessary.
  • Must manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to handle personal stress and potential violence is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of armed security experience is preferred (may be substituted with honorable military service).
  • Experience in law enforcement is preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare security is preferred.
  • Active Level 3 Certification (Texas) is required.
  • For positions in Texas, an active Level 3 security officer commission with the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau (TDPSPSB) is mandatory.
  • New hires in Texas must obtain their security commission prior to the start date.
  • New hires in New Mexico must be eligible to process and obtain their security commission prior to the start date.
  • New hires in Louisiana may not carry their weapon on duty until they have completed 40 hours of training and received authorization from the CHRISTUS Vice President of Security.
  • Verbal de-escalation training must be completed within 60 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within 60 days of hire from the American Heart Association.
  • Training in expandable baton use, defensive tactics, firearms, weapon qualification, and firearms retention must be completed prior to receiving authorization to carry.
  • IAHSS Basic Security Certification must be completed within one year of full-time employment.
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment and post-offer assessments is required.
  • Random drug screening will be conducted.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • The following FEMA Emergency Management Institute Courses must be completed: IS – 100.c, IS – 200.b, and IS – 230.d.
