Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Traffic Design Technician to join our team at the City of Amarillo, Texas. As a key member of our Traffic Engineering Department, you will play a critical role in providing GIS/Computer-Aided Drafting, design support, and other related services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare plans, sketches, and diagrams used by the Traffic Engineering Department using GIS/CADD/personal computer and printers.
  • Draw and design plans for signals, traffic control, bus routes, as-builts, island removal, and information maps.
  • Prepare collision diagrams for studies and PowerPoint sketches for Traffic Advisory Board agenda items.
  • Sketch work orders, sight restriction diagrams, and driveway permits on personal computer.
  • Update city maps.
  • Make manual measurements of streets and alleys for use in traffic engineering studies, sight restrictions, driveway permits, and traffic engineering drawings.
  • Investigate sight restrictions, including making field investigations, sending sight restriction letters, and following up to ensure citizen compliance.
  • Assist Traffic Technician or Traffic Engineer by collecting, compiling, and analyzing Traffic Engineering study data, including updating existing maps and databases, updating existing condition drawings, drawing new maps and diagrams as necessary, and gathering necessary measurement data.
  • Deal directly with the public concerning sight restrictions, traffic counts, and city maps.
  • Prepare studies, including but not limited to Top 10 Accident Study and Speed and Parking Studies.
  • Develop, review, and accept various Traffic Control Plans.
  • Take citizen complaints and requests, collect necessary data to handle requests, make recommendations on speed and parking changes to the Traffic Engineer, and phone or write a response to the citizen request.
  • Directly supervise Hourly Traffic Counter position.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent plus two years of college, preferably in math, engineering, or science, and a minimum of five years of related experience.
  • IMSA Certifications: Work Zone and Traffic Control within 2 years; and Basic Traffic Engineering required.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to use a computer for work processing and spreadsheet purposes.
  • Ability to use highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD.
  • Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as traffic counts, communication equipment, and school flashers.
  • Ability to create plans and guide implementation of new technology systems and equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand and work from blueprints and diagrams.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to use a traffic counter and radar gun.
