School Aide/Paraprofessional

The School Aide is an individual who works with students requiring instructional, and/or behavioral assistance under the supervision of the special education department and/or supervising designee.
The School Aide may also provide support services to assist students with personal, physical mobility and therapeutic care needs, as established by a rehabilitation health practitioner, social worker or other health care professional.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follows through with IEP objectives, including math, reading, speech, independent skills, and managing behavioral deficits and excesses, one on one or as a general classroom aide
- Facilitates teacher-directed learning activities, including lesson plans, worksheets, reinforcement systems, small groups, social games, and work assistance
- Assists students when included in general education classes
- Communicates pertinent information to teachers
- Accompanies students during recess and lunch periods, along with community experiences
- Strictly adheres to confidentiality requirements regarding all matters pertaining to students, parents, parent communications, and/or classroom activities
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assists with activities of prescribed programs, including those written by related service personnel, such as PT, OT, and SLP
- Assists students in the development of independent skills through self-care activities, such as toileting, clothing routines, feeding, and personal hygiene
- May be asked to assist in behavior management techniques at the direction of the teacher and/or other school professional
- Assists teacher with clerical duties, including making stimuli, making copies, maintaining a clean and organized classroom, preparing materials, and assignment scoring
- Assists with transfers and ambulation
- Appropriately reports changes in client status or as directed by IHP/IEP
Requirements:
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals, including supervisors, co-workers, clients, via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
- Computer proficiency required
- Must be at least 18 years of age
