Job Summary:

As a Behavior Intervention Specialist with the Peoria Unified School District, you will play a vital role in supporting students with significant disabilities that impact their social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. In this position, you will work closely with the Special Education Teacher, Psychologist, and/or School Administration to assist in the education, care, and development of students with complex needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement the Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports philosophy in supporting students with disabilities as prescribed by the supervising teacher or other certified professional.
  • Assist teachers and/or school psychologists in applying effective behavioral management practices and teaching interpersonal/social skills, coping skills, and social communication skills to students as prescribed by the supervising teacher, psychologist, behavior interventionist, BCBA, or administrator.
  • Foster positive student-peer and staff interactions.
  • Contribute to the development of behavior support plans and behavior intervention plans, including monitoring and charting specific student behaviors.
  • Recognize and redirect negative interactions between students.
  • Provide assistance in learning environments to handle behavioral issues, applying crisis intervention to students with aggressive behavior and physical management for students posing a safety risk to self or others as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Assist teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Maintain safety and appropriate behaviors in various learning environments; respond to crisis calls, assess situations, and follow through accordingly.
  • Promote positive social interaction on the playground and other settings outside of the classroom.
  • Accurately record student activities and behavior, using a computer/device to enter student information and data; complete applicable forms, schedules, and instructional reports as directed.
  • Participate in behavior modification plans, teacher pre-planning sessions, and learning activity development; prepare or assist in preparing instructional and vocational materials.
  • Attend professional development classes.
  • May participate in the Medicaid reimbursement program, requiring log maintenance and scheduled training.
  • Assist students with activities of daily living, including hygiene and toileting.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with students, employees, community members, and vendors.
  • Maintain high levels of ethical behavior and confidentiality.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; AA degree or 60 college credit hours preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience supporting students with disabilities impacting social/emotional/behavioral areas of development.
  • Able to participate in additional behavioral tech training.
  • Must pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Arizona driver's license.
  • May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • May be required to lift students weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • May be required to physically manage or support student elopement.
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours.
  • Must pass classes in and obtain certification in CPI, First Aid, and CPR.

Estimated Salary: $45,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
