Job Summary

The Director of Nursing (DON) is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the delivery of nursing services in a correctional healthcare setting. As a key member of the healthcare team, the successful candidate will have a strong background in nursing leadership, with experience in a correctional healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of nursing personnel in one or more patient care units, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care and services.
  • Verify patient needs are met and evaluate nursing care and patient care unit performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
  • Participate in the planning of work for assigned units and coordinate activities with other patient units/departments, promoting a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Plan and organize training for staff members, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide excellent patient care and services.
  • Conduct random and scheduled audits to assess site compliance with contractual requirements, accreditation standards, and continuous quality safety improvement (QAPI) opportunities, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
  • Facilitate the completion of QAPI forms and forward findings to leadership, ensuring timely and effective implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate and serve on site-level QAPI committee, contributing to the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct at minimum annual accreditation readiness audits to assess compliance with standards and identify opportunities for improvement, ensuring the site remains accredited and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Develop action plans based on accreditation readiness audit findings and collaborate with site leadership to implement plans and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Anticipate healthcare delivery and contractual issues and deal with potential issues proactively, ensuring the site remains compliant with contractual requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with site leadership and clients to meet the goals of the service contract in conjunction with regional leadership, ensuring the site remains aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Perform screening interviews with candidates for basic knowledge, skills within the corrections environment, ensuring the site attracts and retains top talent.
  • Set and communicate recruitment standards and take accountability for recruiting effectiveness and compliance across their area of responsibility, ensuring the site maintains a high-performing team.
  • Participate in the selection process for open site positions, ensuring the site selects the best candidates for the role.
  • Identify high potential staff for development, promotion, and succession opportunities, ensuring the site develops and retains top talent.
  • Perform at-hire and annual clinical competency assessments and checks to promote the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient nursing care, ensuring the site maintains a high level of patient care and services.
  • Provide developmental mentoring, formalized feedback, and coaching to staff, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide excellent patient care and services.
  • Coordinate and monitor orientation and onboarding activities of new hires and staff that have moved into a different role, ensuring a smooth transition and effective onboarding process.
  • Perform an ongoing assessment of staff learning needs and facilitate in-service and continuing education for nursing and ancillary personnel to promote professional development and enhance performance, ensuring the site maintains a high level of staff knowledge and skills.
  • Interpret regulations and standards and communicate site and unit performance objectives to staff, ensuring they understand their role in maintaining compliance and achieving organizational objectives.
  • Provide guidance and direction on state licensure, accreditation, and regulatory agency requirements, ensuring the site remains compliant with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure nursing practice conforms to state licensure, accreditation, and regulatory agency requirements in the clinical setting, ensuring the site maintains a high level of patient care and services.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school required; Bachelor or Master's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Licensed to practice nursing in the state, board-certified or board-eligible in medicine, and has training and experience providing services to an adult population.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting, with correctional healthcare experience preferred.
  • Previous clinical operations management experience preferred; previous direct management experience within a correctional health setting desired.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards (NCCHC, ACA & state-specific), as well as experience with quality improvement programs and clinical auditing, preferred.
  • Specialty certification in correctional healthcare desired (Certified Correctional Health Professional: CCHP, Certified Correctional Health Professional Nurse: CCHP-RN).
