Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Steam Plant Operator to join our team at Colby College. As a Steam Plant Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers, turbine generators, and auxiliary equipment in our Central Steam Plant. This is an on-call position that requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team to provide a comfortable environment for our residents and staff.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain high-pressure boilers, turbine generators, and auxiliary equipment
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and repairs as directed
- Monitor and record steam plant data hourly
- Test condition of boiler water as directed
- Read and record opacity emissions in accordance with Colby directives and state and federal regulations
- Operate, change, and clean burners
- Operate soot blowers
- Perform other tasks and duties as directed by the Engineer in Charge
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operators license required
- Mechanical ability to operate, maintain, and service mechanical equipment and systems used in high-pressure steam plants
- Ability to operate and maintain Biomass and Natural Gas Boilers and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment
Physical Environment:
The position involves working in a general indoor and outdoor campus environment, interacting with students, faculty, and staff. Duties require frequent movement, walking, standing, bending, twisting, and considerable lifting.
Physical Effort:
The position involves some sitting, though frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and considerable lifting is often required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand and wrist motion is also necessary. Ability to enter confined spaces per Colby safety policies.
Standards:
Employee will be required to dress and conduct themselves appropriately in accordance with Colby College policies.
