Position Overview

The Richmond SPCA is a cherished non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare, striving to foster a compassionate community through essential programs such as pet adoption, retention, training, advocacy, and humane education. Each year, we rescue, rehabilitate, and find homes for nearly 4,000 animals while offering vital services to keep pets in loving homes.

We are currently seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our team at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, a full-service, affordable facility that serves the public. Our mission is to alleviate the financial barriers to veterinary care, ensuring that all pets receive the medical attention they need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and monitor controlled substances for patients in the hospital.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
  • Prepare and oversee surgical patients, including pre-medication, induction, intubation, and monitoring.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, following the guidance of veterinarians.
  • Deliver exceptional care to surgical and hospitalized pets, as well as outpatients.
  • Communicate with clients in a compassionate and effective manner.
  • Support existing operational systems within the hospital.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians to ensure efficient patient care and hospital workflow.
  • Perform all duties associated with a veterinary assistant.
  • Participate in mandatory training sessions and meetings.
  • Recognize when assistance is needed and seek help appropriately.
  • Complete other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Strong customer service skills with a focus on empathetic communication.
  • Experience handling both dogs and cats, including those with behavioral challenges.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Availability during weekdays; weekend work is not required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Reliable transportation is essential, even in adverse weather conditions.
  • Current LVT license in good standing in Virginia is required.

  • Experience with dental procedures is preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Capable of pushing and pulling heavy equipment.
  • Comfortable working around animals, including those that may be sick or injured.
  • Able to perform repetitive physical tasks, including bending and kneeling.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
Work Environment
  • Fast-paced setting with potential exposure to hazards such as animal waste and cleaning agents.
  • High noise levels are to be expected.
  • Risk of animal bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
