Automotive Technician

Responsible to: LEAD TECHNICIAN
Position Summary:The Automotive Technician is responsible for executing a range of tasks on both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, including tractor-trailers. This role involves inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing various systems such as brake mechanisms, engines, electrical systems, steering assemblies, transmissions, and tires. The technician will also maintain and repair diesel, CNG, and gasoline-powered equipment, as well as trailers and other mobile assets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine maintenance on vehicles, including battery checks and oil changes to ensure optimal performance.
- Examine various components of vehicles, such as brake systems, wheel bearings, and steering mechanisms, to verify their operational condition.
- Utilize a variety of tools and equipment, including pressure gauges, pneumatic wrenches, welding apparatus, screwdrivers, hoists, and jacks, while adhering to safety protocols.
- Identify malfunctions in defective equipment through inspection and testing using devices like motor analyzers and handheld computers to determine necessary repairs.
- Perform test drives on vehicles to confirm proper operation and diagnose issues for resolution.
- Replace components such as parts, valves, bearings, and gears as required, and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
- Measure vehicle emissions to ensure compliance with established standards.
- Inspect and verify that parts meet factory specifications by checking clearances and dimensions.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and input data into the company’s computer system.
- Manage spare parts inventory, including ordering and tracking parts to minimize downtime and reduce costs.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment and components regularly.
- Strong customer service skills are essential.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces or awkward positions.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in truck and trailer maintenance is required.
- Technical certification or degree is preferred.
- Experience with diagnostic computers is necessary.
- Previous experience as a diesel technician is advantageous.
