Job Title: Process Design Engineer

Join Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a leading research institution, as a Process Design Engineer in the Enrichment Systems Engineering Section. This role is part of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate, where you will contribute to advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications.

About the Role:

As a Process Design Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and creative design solutions to strategically advance centrifuge machine design and support enrichment system development. You will work closely with the Testbed Design Engineering Group Leader to deliver task assignments and design outputs while following established design processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the process design of complex testbeds for evaluation and researching enrichment devices as well as production systems for stable isotopes enrichment.
  • Develop process designs for new testbeds and modifications to existing testbeds based on requirements from various stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain process design documentation, including Design Basis / Systems Requirements Documents, PFDs and P&IDs, Heat and Material Balances, Line sizing and hydraulic calculations, Equipment and instrument sizing/selection, and Control System Narratives.
Requirements:
  • PhD with 1-3 years of experience, or a MS degree with 4-8 years of experience, or a BS degree with relevant experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
  • MS Visio and Autodesk AutoCAD experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active DOE Q Clearance.
  • Licensed NCEES Professional Engineer.
  • Knowledge of the theory and application of gas and liquid phase chemical engineering principles with experience in reactive gas operations.
  • Experience with pressure and vacuum systems.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling programs such as AFT Arrow & AFT Fathom.
  • Test Engineer experience in a testing & development environment.
