Job Overview

As a vital component of sustainable infrastructure development, stormwater management professionals play a crucial role in ensuring environmental compliance. Metric Environmental is seeking a Stormwater Management Scientist to contribute to our diverse Water Resources Engineering Division. In this position, you will leverage your expertise in stormwater systems to conduct inspections, generate reports, and offer strategic recommendations to clients, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations.

Your fieldwork will involve performing inspections to evaluate compliance across a variety of projects, in alignment with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) at federal, state, and local levels. When not in the field, you will collaborate on the creation of stormwater permits, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWP3), and Stormwater Quality Control Plans (SWQCP).

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular site evaluations, inspections, monitoring, and sampling of construction, municipal, and industrial sites.
  • Draft technical reports that meet regulatory standards.
  • Identify, evaluate, and document potential stormwater concerns during field assessments.
  • Assist in the formulation and execution of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWP3s), Stormwater Quality Control Plans (SWQCPs), and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCCs) in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Support the preparation of necessary permits from regulatory bodies for stormwater-related activities.
  • Perform stormwater construction inspections for various clients, including Department of Transportation (DOT) projects and private developments, ensuring compliance with established plans and specifications while verifying the effective implementation of stormwater best management practices (BMPs).

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to interpret and communicate federal, state, and local regulations effectively.
  • Experience in preparing SWPPP, SPCC, and SWQCP documentation.
  • Capability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Familiarity with modern office procedures, including communication systems and record-keeping.
  • Proficiency in various computer software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and database management.
  • Experience with GIS and/or AutoCAD software is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with company personnel and clients.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, particularly in conveying technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively to address complex challenges.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management abilities.

Educational Background and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, chemistry, biology, geology, or a related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in stormwater or environmental-related fields.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to maintain insurability under company travel policies.
  • CESSWI, CISEC, or CPESC certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Completion of 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training.
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction Training.
