Department Mission
The Department of Nurse Anesthesia is dedicated to equipping students with the essential knowledge and competencies required to function effectively within a collaborative healthcare team. Our goal is to produce leaders and scholars who will enhance the field of nurse anesthesia through research, scholarship, and community engagement. We achieve this by cultivating an environment that prioritizes excellence, embraces diversity, encourages creativity, and acknowledges accomplishments. We invite qualified candidates to consider a term Instructor position within our Nurse Anesthesia Department.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching
- Oversee designated courses in the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) program, adhering to the teaching workload guidelines of the College of Health Professions.
- Deliver content in assigned courses throughout the DNAP curriculum, aligned with departmental needs and individual expertise.
- Present at continuing education events organized by Nurse Anesthesiology Faculty Associates.
- Act as an academic advisor for graduate students enrolled in the DNAP program.
- Chair and participate in doctoral project committees throughout students' enrollment.
- Provide course content and timely assessments of graduate students, following university and departmental standards.
- Engage in activities that foster partnerships with affiliate clinical sites, including customized continuing education events.
Service
- Contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives related to course design and evaluation.
- Participate in departmental, school, university, and professional committees, engaging in various forms of professional service.
- Offer professional and community service in areas of expertise.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in a relevant field.
- Experience or potential for effectively mentoring graduate students from underrepresented or historically marginalized backgrounds.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment.
- Experience in promoting inclusivity and diversity within academic settings.
- Valid nursing license to practice as an RN and CRNA in any state, with eligibility for licensure in Virginia.
- Certification or recertification as a CRNA by the NBCRNA.
- Ability to commute to one of the DNAP program sites and be present in-person as required.
- Willingness to travel to other program sites for teaching purposes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of experience as a CRNA.
- Strong communication skills demonstrated through public speaking, presentations, or written work.
- Background in clinical practice and teaching in nurse anesthesia.
