Job Overview

INTRODUCTION: This role plays a vital part in the Public Works Department, focusing on the upkeep and safeguarding of the Tribe's infrastructure, including buildings and water distribution systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

MAINTENANCE TASKS:

  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on buildings, which encompasses plumbing, minor electrical work, window and door fixes, drywall repairs, painting, and cleaning.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of appliances and fire alarm systems.
  • Identify and report any unsafe or hazardous conditions.
  • Perform monthly readings of water meters.
  • Monitor fluoride levels in the tribal water supply.
  • Maintain and repair fences, gates, walls, irrigation systems, and walkways.
  • Ensure the interior and exterior of buildings are well-maintained and painted.
  • Regularly clear drainage ditches and culverts, especially during rainy seasons.
  • Complete daily assigned tasks and other duties as required, with hours varying based on a 24-hour schedule and seasonal needs.
  • Secure tribal buildings after office hours.
  • Assist the Director with various employee needs, such as relocating desks and office equipment.
  • Remove snow from walkways and driveways, applying approved deicing agents to ensure safety during inclement weather.
  • Properly maintain tools and equipment, ensuring safe storage.
  • Assemble and disassemble damaged components of buildings and facilities, assisting colleagues as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively on special projects and ongoing maintenance tasks while maintaining a respectful demeanor.
  • Conduct interior or exterior rehabilitation on properties owned by the Tribe.
  • Execute duties as assigned to fulfill the Scope of Work outlined by the Public Works Director.
  • Perform framing for floors, walls, or roofs.
  • Install sub-floors or underlayment and various types of flooring such as vinyl, carpet, or tile.
  • Handle sheetrock installation or repairs, including appropriate taping and texturing techniques.
  • Manage painting tasks, including preparation and application of primer and finish coats.
  • Conduct interior finishing work on doors, window trims, baseboards, and cabinetry.
  • Remove or install insulation in walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • Utilize tools and equipment safely and effectively, ensuring proper maintenance and storage.
  • Accomplish a variety of tasks essential for project completion in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment throughout all phases of construction.
  • Use appropriate safety gear when necessary, including ear protection, safety glasses, dust masks, and gloves.
  • Adhere to OSHA safety regulations during all construction activities.

WATER SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor the water supply within the transmission and distribution system using telemetry equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Operate pumps and valves to maintain optimal water supply, pressure, and flow.
  • Develop and maintain operational documentation and detailed logs for systems maintenance.
  • Ensure safety by managing valve operations during equipment servicing.
  • Investigate alarms and coordinate emergency repairs as needed, collaborating with internal and external agencies.
  • Repair malfunctions in the distribution system, including gauges, pumps, filters, and other equipment.
  • Collect water samples and assess chemical concentrations, ensuring compliance with clean water standards.
  • Address inquiries and complaints from customers and the public.
  • Prepare and maintain all necessary documentation and reports.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED with three years of experience in building maintenance or residential construction, including one year in water distribution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Upon successful completion of Water Distribution Class I certification, salary will increase; certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire, with on-the-job training provided.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Proficient in using measuring tools and various machinery and carpentry tools.
  • Knowledgeable in painting techniques and surface preparation methods.
  • Experience with computer-controlled systems and maintenance management software.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to accurately estimate time and materials for maintenance tasks.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess and maintain a first aid and CPR certification, or be able to obtain it within the first six months of employment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and insurance, and be eligible to operate a GSA vehicle.
