POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Executive Director (ED) is accountable to the Board of Directors and will oversee the financial health and operational integrity of the organization. This role encompasses fundraising initiatives, organizational growth, and the effective execution of the mission. The ED will lead the staff, volunteers, and programs of the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh (DSAP). In partnership with the Board, the ED will craft and execute successful fundraising strategies. This pivotal position demands exceptional communication and leadership capabilities, fostering relationships with a diverse array of community members, groups, and stakeholders. Key responsibilities include:

Leadership & Advocacy

  • Exhibit empathy and dedication to supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
  • Establish and nurture strong connections within the Greater Pittsburgh Region, engaging with peer organizations and various community stakeholders.
  • Effectively convey the organization's mission, vision, objectives, and strategies to all involved parties.
  • Engage actively with partner organizations and maintain meaningful relationships with funders.
  • Safeguard DSAP's legal interests while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws.
  • Provide guidance and resources related to Down syndrome to families and community members.
  • Enhance the public perception of individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Support the development of a robust board of directors.

Programs & Services

  • Design and oversee programs and services that align with DSAP's strategic goals and mission.
  • Establish systems for program evaluation and monitor community engagement in DSAP's activities.
  • Maintain accurate data to ensure accountability to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver regular updates on programs to the board.
  • Forge alliances and strategic partnerships to create new programming opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Administer and manage budgets while supervising and facilitating large-scale events and fundraising efforts efficiently.

Board, Staff & Volunteer Engagement

  • Collaborate with the volunteer Board of Directors on various tasks, including participation as a non-voting member of the Executive Committee and the Board-at-large, ensuring adherence to bylaws and commitment to the organization's strategic plan.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop interns, volunteers, and staff.
  • Recruit and secure volunteers for programs and events in partnership with staff and the Board.
  • Create training opportunities for board members, staff, and volunteers; orient new members to the organization; provide management and oversight for staff.
  • Conduct annual and periodic performance evaluations of staff in collaboration with the Executive Committee, offering feedback to interns and volunteers as necessary.

Revenue Generation

  • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, the ED will strategize, plan, and execute standalone revenue-generating events that resonate with the organization's mission, including the annual Pittsburgh Buddy Walk.
  • Develop and direct marketing initiatives for fundraising and programs.
  • Design and implement revenue-generating strategies for annual fund solicitations.
  • Maintain relationships with existing partners and donors while actively seeking new revenue sources, including grant funding.
  • Create avenues for non-monetary planned gifts, personal property donations, and gifts-in-kind.

Public Relations & Communication

  • Network with national organizations and other groups related to Down syndrome.
  • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, uphold the DSAP brand and enhance engagement across social media platforms.
  • Adhere to established social media policies.
  • Oversee the Program Coordinator in managing DSAP's communications, including newsletters and the organization’s website.
  • Act as the media liaison for DSAP, maintaining regular communication with stakeholders and the public.

Administration & Operations

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance organizational software and infrastructure.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the organization.
  • Participate in the strategic planning process.
  • Manage all administrative functions, including maintaining essential documents such as articles of incorporation, bylaws, IRS Form 990, audit reports, and contracts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Passion for advocacy on behalf of the Down syndrome community and their families.
  • Bachelor's degree in social services, healthcare, business management, nonprofit management, public administration, or related fields.
  • A minimum of three to five years of professional experience in nonprofit management or related areas.
  • Strong background in marketing, public relations, and fundraising, with the ability to engage diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating with a board of directors.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with an innovative approach to organizational planning.
  • Dynamic and engaging team player who enjoys representing the organization publicly.
  • Experience in creating, organizing, and managing substantial budgets.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Products, including CRM/Event Management tools.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills across diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in business, public administration, healthcare-related fields, or human and social service disciplines.
  • Familiarity with website software and graphic design tools.
  • Experience in organizational development planning.
  • Proven track record in writing and managing successful grant proposals.
