Nursing Supervisor Job Description

Job Summary:

The Nursing Supervisor is a key member of the healthcare team at Health Care District of Palm Beach County. This role is responsible for overseeing and managing all nursing functions for one or more nursing departments. The successful candidate will have a strong background in nursing and leadership, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage room assignments for patients admitted to the hospital, ensuring efficient use of resources and optimal patient care.
  • Review admission documentation, including admission orders, to ensure accurate and timely bed assignments.
  • Assist in the transfer of patients to other medical facilities, ensuring seamless care coordination.
  • Coordinate shift assignments for nursing staff, making recommendations to unit Nursing Managers and/or Director of Nursing to allocate personnel accordingly.
  • Provide direct patient care when needed, ensuring high-quality care and patient satisfaction.
  • Assist with patient care and coordination in outpatient settings, as well as in-patient units.
  • Participate in emergency codes throughout the hospital, demonstrating a commitment to patient safety and well-being.
  • Supervise hospital employees when other management is not present, reporting to administration as needed.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to newly hired staff, ensuring a smooth transition into their roles.
  • Instruct new hires on nursing policies and procedures, promoting a culture of excellence and compliance.
  • Assist with planning and leading skills labs for all nursing staff, enhancing knowledge and skills.
  • Supervise staff to ensure quality care is provided, meeting patient care needs in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations.
  • Support and demonstrate practices consistent with the mission, philosophy, standards, policies, and procedures of the Nursing Department.
  • Collect and analyze data on the nursing units, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective action plans.
  • Address patient concerns in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, performing immediate follow-up and reporting findings and recommendations to Nursing Managers and Director of Nursing.
  • Investigate incidents regarding staff and patients, identifying contributing factors and participating in the implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Communicate with nurse managers and Director of Nursing consistently regarding issues or problems identified during the supervised shift, making recommendations for resolution.
  • Ensure patient safety and care in accordance with hospital standards and applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate on performance appraisals of employees who work on the Nursing Supervisor's unit(s).
  • Supervise and discipline nursing staff as needed, ensuring compliance with hospital standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure staff reporting of variances and provide initial follow-up on any reported patient safety incidents, promoting a culture of patient safety.
  • Makes regular rounds of all patient care units to ensure safety of patient care and compliance with standards.
  • Participate in the performance improvement processes within the hospital quality improvement program, as assigned, and by attending quality or team meetings as needed.
  • Assist and participate in activities related to the inspection of the hospital by regulatory or accrediting agencies, as needed.
  • Demonstrate understanding of accreditation and regulatory standards and provide leadership for assuring staff compliance with standards.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare nursing model and provide leadership for staff compliance with the best practice bundles.
  • Provide patient care utilizing best practice bundles and the RROHC philosophy.
  • Ensure physicians and families are notified appropriately of any changes in a patient's condition, transfer, discharges, admissions, or any unusual occurrence, notifying senior leadership in the event of an emergency.
  • Ensure appropriate delivery of nursing services, including medication administration, transcription of physician orders, patient assessments, and infection control procedures.
  • Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent, including working in a special needs shelter or Red Cross shelters, or to perform other emergency duties, including responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Experience: Five (5) years experience in acute care is required. Or, a minimum of two (2) years experience in acute care combined with a minimum of one (1) year of Nursing Supervisor experience in a Hospital, Nursing Home, or similar healthcare facility is required.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
  • Licensure: State of Florida Registered Nurse license required.
