Irvine, California, United States Turion Space Full time
Position: Mission Operations & Automation Engineer

Department: Vehicle / Ground Software

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Irvine, California

Reporting To: Adrian Javorski

Overview

As a Mission Operations & Automation Engineer, you will play a crucial role in satellite mission control, ensuring the collection of essential telemetry for mission verification. This position offers a unique opportunity for real-time problem-solving and data-driven decision-making that influences the space sector, government operations, and Turion Space's objectives. When not engaged in mission control, you will focus on establishing the operational framework necessary for success, which includes drafting procedures, developing and testing automation tools, and conducting mission planning for the ground communication systems that support our DROID spacecraft and future missions. You will oversee ground systems throughout the mission lifecycle, from integration to launch and on-orbit operations. Collaborating with engineers from various disciplines, you will assess and implement operational strategies for ground segment assets. As a multi-disciplinary expert, your role will ensure the safety and reliability of the software and automation that govern the entire system. This will involve updating software to not only alert you to potential issues but also to autonomously recover the system from various anomalies, thereby safeguarding mission success. You will contribute to the development and enhancement of toolchains to streamline daily operations. Through ongoing improvements and automated data assessments, your goal will be to minimize the need for operator intervention in system operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute real-time ground segment operations in accordance with established timelines, procedures, and flight protocols.
  • Support DROID operations as an integral member of the flight systems team.
  • Collaborate with external partners to schedule, test, and operate communication systems between ground and space.
  • Manage procedures, process enhancements, configuration files, and scripts essential for mission accomplishment.
  • Lead and advocate for automation improvements to ensure seamless execution of concurrent missions with a compact team of operators.
  • Work closely with hardware and software teams to incorporate operational cadence and usability requirements into their designs.
  • Coordinate global telemetry services for on-orbit operations.
  • Organize operator and asset schedules effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Proficient programming skills.
  • At least 1 year of operational experience with spacecraft, ground stations, or other intricate communication systems.
  • Minimum of 1 year of project or industry experience with RF, controls, flight software, spacecraft, or communication systems.
  • Willingness to support extended hours and weekends as needed to meet critical project deadlines.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience collaborating with government entities (e.g., USAF, NASA, FAA, FCC, NTIA).
  • Familiarity with both front-end and back-end web development.
  • Experience in organizing technical data with a keen attention to detail.
  • Experience in developing link budgets and other engineering calculations pertinent to system specifications and design.
  • Experience in LEO, MEO, and/or lunar orbit ground station operations and engineering.
  • Proficient in handling tracking and orbit determination files, formats, and tools.
  • Experience working in technical teams within fast-paced, demanding environments.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of networks, electronics, mathematics, engineering, and physics.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with exceptional analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Python and Ruby programming languages.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, take initiative, and communicate effectively.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based operating systems.
  • Experience in automating complex systems.
