Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is in search of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor for its operational headquarters. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a skilled team engaged in a variety of equipment operation, preventative maintenance, and manual labor tasks aimed at preserving the integrity of Virginia's road infrastructure.

Essential Qualifications


• Proficient in interpreting and applying safety protocols and traffic management guidelines.

• Proven ability to lead, manage, and mentor team members effectively.

• Competent in utilizing computer systems and software tools.

• Compliance with safety footwear regulations is mandatory.

• Basic understanding of inventory management processes.

• Extensive knowledge of highway maintenance and construction methodologies.

• Capability to acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance thereafter. Adherence to DOT and VDOT standards is required when operating CDL vehicles.

• Proficient in operating and maintaining light to medium-duty vehicles and equipment.

• Ability to perform strenuous manual labor and utilize hand and power tools effectively.

Additional Qualifications


• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.

• Experience in report preparation and record-keeping.

• Certification in Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operation is advantageous.

• A background in Construction or a related field is desirable.

• Familiarity with computer systems and software applications is beneficial.

• Experience in roadway maintenance tasks is a plus.

• Intermediate knowledge of Work Zone Traffic Control Safety is preferred.

• Experience in roadway repair, work zone setup, traffic management, and flagging, including knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.

• Proven experience in leading and training maintenance crews.

• Certification in CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course is a plus.

• Experience in applying inventory management practices is beneficial.

• Familiarity with emergency operations, including snow removal, storm response, and accident cleanup is advantageous.

• Flagger certification is preferred.

This position is classified as essential, requiring all associated duties to be performed during emergency situations, which may include adverse weather conditions, disaster response, and other urgent operations. Duties may necessitate working outside of standard business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The determination of when essential personnel are required to report will be made by VDOT.

VDOT employs a market-based compensation program approved by DHRM, which may result in advertised pay rates that do not align with Commonwealth pay bands.

Note: All new hires without a valid CDL must obtain their CDL within 11 months of their start date. Operating commercial motor vehicles is prohibited until the necessary licensure and medical certification are obtained.
