POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the guidance of a Nurse Manager and with direct supervision, the Operating Room Technician plays a vital role in assisting with surgical operations as a scrub member of the surgical team. This position involves preparing instruments and supplies while ensuring a clean and safe environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Arrive promptly at the designated operating room.
  2. Verify the availability of all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies for the surgical procedure, adhering to physician preferences and established protocols.
  3. Collaborate with the circulating nurse to complete scrubbing and set up before the patient enters the room, inspecting instrument trays to ensure all required items are present and arranging instruments, sutures, and linens in the correct order.
  4. Assist the surgeon as a scrubbed assistant, passing instruments, sutures, and sponges as requested and anticipating needs. Help the circulating nurse maintain an accurate count of sponges, instruments, and sharps throughout the procedure.
  5. Employ strict aseptic techniques in all relevant situations and monitor compliance by other personnel.
  6. Assist in the transportation and positioning of patients as needed.
  7. Ensure proper care and labeling of surgical specimens in collaboration with a professional nurse.
  8. Return soiled instruments to the Sterile Processing Department for cleaning and sterilization, and return unused sterile supplies to the appropriate area.
  9. Support the orientation and development of new staff members, acting as a preceptor when suitable.
  10. Evaluate environmental safety and maintain a safe atmosphere tailored to the age and developmental status of the patient.
  11. Adhere to established Standards of Behavior.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• One to three months of on-the-job experience to gain a working knowledge of surgical procedures and aseptic techniques, as well as to develop the skills necessary for effective coordination of instruments and supplies during operations.

• Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technology program.

• Current certification in Operating Room Technology.

• Current CPR certification.

• Ability to assist surgeons in accordance with hospital policies.

• Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, physicians, and nursing staff.

• Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.

• Capability to assist with the transportation of patients and equipment when necessary.
