Role Responsibilities
As an Optical Communication Systems Engineer, you will engage in the analysis and development of cutting-edge satellite and terrestrial laser communication technologies. You will also guide engineering teams by articulating a clear vision to meet the program's technical objectives.
Daily Tasks
In this position, your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting engineering analyses and trade studies for free-space laser communication systems.
- Designing systems and developing hardware for high-rate satellite payloads, terrestrial links, and feeder links, while preparing proposals for new laser communication concepts.
- Building and nurturing customer relationships to explore new business avenues involving both governmental and commercial sectors.
Qualifications Required
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Laser Communications Systems Engineering or Program Management.
- Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering for free-space laser communication systems.
- Relevant experience in program planning, monitoring, financial management, contracts, and risk assessment.
- Proven track record in the design and development of optical and laser communication systems for terrestrial or satellite use.
- Experience with flight optical payloads.
- Ability to perform comprehensive systems-level analyses.
- Capability to devise innovative solutions to complex challenges.
- Solid understanding of optical and communication systems based on specifications and fundamental principles.
- A Master's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
- Active DoD Top Secret Clearance with the potential to obtain TS/SCI clearance when feasible.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
- A PhD in a relevant Engineering discipline.
- Experience in optical systems control for precise beam-pointing.
- Familiarity with flight qualification processes for optical systems, fiber optic systems, and components.
- Active TS/SCI Security clearance with SSBI.
- Experience in payload and/or electronics development for satellite applications.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $202,000 to $351,600 annually. At Viasat, we consider various factors in determining compensation, including the role's scope and the candidate's background and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be part of the compensation package, along with a comprehensive range of medical, financial, and other benefits tailored to promote holistic health and wellness.
