Rail Vehicle Maintenance Technician

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is a leading transportation system, operating a vast network of fixed-route services, including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail. We are seeking highly skilled individuals to fill the role of Rail Vehicle & Equipment General Mechanic 1st Class (0831) within our Rail Vehicle Maintenance departments. This position requires expertise in the inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of rail vehicle electrical, pneumatic, and mechanic equipment. Successful candidates will also have experience with the repair of mechanical equipment, electrical, electronic, and air brake systems. HVAC experience is a plus, and familiarity with rail cars is preferred.
Compensation Details
- $35/hr for SEPTA City Transit Division, increasing to $39/hr after 12 months
- $34/hr for SEPTA Suburban Transit Division, increasing to $38/hr after 12 months
- $34/hr for SEPTA Regional Railroad Division, increasing to $38/hr after 12 months
This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, prescription, dental, vision, pension plan, defined benefit pension plan, voluntary governmental 457B deferred comp plan, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and free travel on all SEPTA modes of transportation. SEPTA employees also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, clean, and maintain rail vehicle electrical, pneumatic, and mechanic equipment
- Repair and replace motors, accessory parts, vehicle trucks, parts, truck frames, brake equipment, truck assemblies, air equipment, gears, wheels, brake shoes, etc.
- Check equipment units, parts such as contactor tips for gap, interlock and controlling fingers and tips for wipe and clearance springs for compression and tension, etc
- Diagnose and repair defects of electrical, electronic air conditioning and air brake equipment of rail vehicles
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience in the repair of mechanical equipment, electrical, electronic, and air brake systems preferred
- Possession of a certificate of completion in electrical/electronic field from a vocational/technical school certificate program or comparable certification is highly desired
- Computer literacy and basic knowledge of multi-meters and meggars required
- Valid driver's license or equivalent required
