Nurse Residency Specialist Job Summary

The Nurse Residency Specialist is a key role in creating a supportive learning environment for new graduate nurses to develop their skills and progress to proficient RN competency. This position serves as a coach and mentor to assigned nurse residents and international nurses, implementing system-level guidelines and programming to socialize and enculturate them into SSM Health.

Responsibilities and Requirements
  • Serves as an instructor and facilitator of nursing residency classes and experiences at the system and ministry levels.
  • Participates as an expert clinician in nurse residency program development and enhancement.
  • Utilizes integrative learning approaches to assist with clinical reasoning and skill development of nurse residents, including case studies and simulation.
  • Collaborates with preceptors and nurse leaders to ensure progressive assessment and monitoring of nurse residents and international nurses.
  • Provides coaching and mentorship to preceptors and assigned nurse residents that is consistent with a culture of mutual respect and trust.
  • Works closely with preceptors to assure smooth transition from student into the professional practice role.
  • Collaborates with department leaders in selection and ongoing evaluation of preceptors.
  • Works schedule conducive to nurse resident schedules, including afternoons, evenings, nights, and weekends.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Three years' registered nurse experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share or receive information through oral communication.
