Akron Preparatory Academy is a public charter institution serving K-8 students with a comprehensive, college preparatory education. Situated on a historic campus with outstanding educational facilities, the school has been a cornerstone for families in Akron and Summit counties.
The Head of School will act as the instructional and administrative leader of the ACCEL Schools campus, responsible for the formulation, execution, and realization of the school's academic objectives, student progress, and daily operations. This role is crucial in ensuring positive academic outcomes for all students while implementing sustainable instructional practices that include professional development, teacher evaluation, curriculum enhancement, and pedagogical growth.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
- Direct the strategic design and implementation of instructional practices, including integrated curriculum development, instructional coaching, and data-driven decision-making.
- Oversee the instructional programs of the school, regularly assessing curriculum, teaching methods, and classroom observations to promote diverse instructional strategies aligned with best practices.
- Ensure high levels of achievement and engagement for all students through rigorous academic programs and effective classroom instruction.
- Work diligently to achieve all goals related to student performance and school culture.
- Facilitate the adoption of a standards-based curriculum, conduct weekly lesson plan reviews, and perform regular classroom walkthroughs.
- Assume accountability for student success in both academic and social-emotional domains.
- Lead the development and implementation of the school's cultural programming and positive behavior interventions.
- Collaborate with staff to organize teacher teams, professional development days, and data analysis sessions.
- Ensure ongoing professional development for teachers, aligning training with current research-based methodologies.
- Implement behavior management strategies that promote a respectful and orderly learning environment.
- Oversee the Charter School's Special Education program, ensuring high achievement for all participants.
- Coordinate summer educational programs and before/after school initiatives as necessary.
Team Leadership
- Foster a strong school community by nurturing positive relationships with faculty, staff, parents, students, and other stakeholders.
- Provide collaborative leadership for all educators and staff, including supervision, coaching, and performance management.
- Manage the teacher evaluation process, ensuring all educators have opportunities to meet their professional objectives.
- Conduct evaluations in accordance with state requirements.
- Oversee the professional development program, ensuring a collaborative environment with regular training opportunities.
- Create a comprehensive support system for students addressing their academic and behavioral needs.
Organizational Leadership
- Manage daily operations, including facilities, technology, food services, data management, and budget oversight.
- Engage with the Home Office/Operations Team on compliance, budgeting, and campus safety.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to implement an effective talent management system.
- Ensure non-discriminatory practices in faculty and staff selection processes.
- Work with the Home Office/Operations Team on state and federal reporting requirements.
- Oversee student recruitment and retention efforts, aiming for high retention rates.
- Maintain a master school calendar and ensure all communications are current and accessible.
- Engage in regular communication with the Home Office regarding school operations.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
Community Leadership
- Act as the primary liaison to the local community, effectively communicating the school's mission and gathering feedback from families.
- Uphold and implement the school's philosophy and mission in all activities.
- Contribute to a positive school climate by demonstrating high professional standards.
- Build strong relationships with parents through regular communication and involvement opportunities.
- Develop partnerships with external organizations to enhance the school's culture.
- Coordinate family orientations and special projects that promote community involvement.

- Knowledge of State and Common Core Standards.
- Successful completion of background checks.
