Hillenbrand is seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to enhance our hybrid workforce. This role is pivotal in overseeing the daily operations related to domestic Indirect State & Local tax for Hillenbrand, while also contributing to the execution of our corporate tax strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Indirect Tax Compliance:
    • Oversee the tax compliance processes to guarantee timely and precise preparation and submission of returns, including property tax, sales and use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST returns, business licenses, and fuel tax.
  • Tax Authority Audits and Inquiries:
    • Manage the audit processes conducted by state and local tax authorities.
    • Formulate appropriate technical and fact-based responses to audit inquiries.
    • Conduct research on technical issues and create supporting technical memoranda for the company's stance.
    • Critically evaluate tax authority communications and assessments for accuracy in technical, factual, and mathematical aspects.
  • Sales Tax Software Management:
    • Possess familiarity with sales tax engines and their integration with ERP systems.
    • Assist in the implementation of sales tax engines.
    • Oversee Vertex TDM for compliance with sales and use tax.
    • Analyze transactional data for accuracy and compliance.
  • State Exemption Certificates:
    • Establish and maintain a process for obtaining and managing sales tax exemption certificates.
    • Develop guidelines for Operating Companies regarding customer credit issuance.
    • Educate both internal and external stakeholders on exemption certificate requirements.
  • Operational Support:
    • Provide guidance to business units and corporate functions on tax-related matters and policies.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of operational tax processes and technologies to enhance efficiency.
    • Review monthly indirect tax accrual reconciliations and journal entries.
    • Deliver training and support to staff on indirect tax issues.
  • Tax Engine Support:
    • Assist with the configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of tax engines.
    • Advise on data mapping and tax code assignments within tax engine systems.
    • Manage and execute upgrades and testing of tax engines.
  • Special Projects:
    • Support Operating Companies with various indirect tax challenges.
    • Assist in the integration of newly acquired businesses.
    • Participate in due diligence analysis.
    • Evaluate state tax nexus and provide filing recommendations.
    • Monitor legislative changes in tax laws and assess their implications for the business.

Team Structure:

The Indirect Tax Manager will report to the Senior Manager of Tax & Compliance and will supervise direct reports.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Finance, Tax, or Accounting, along with 5+ years of relevant corporate indirect tax experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience with a focus on indirect taxation.
  • Strong working knowledge of advanced state and local indirect tax regulations.
  • Experience in indirect taxation, preferably within a multinational manufacturing context, with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with tax technology such as Vertex Q and/or Vertex O, Vertex Indirect Tax Return Software, SureTax, or similar, including their implementation and integration with ERP systems is advantageous.
  • Ability to research and document complex tax issues and implement tax-saving strategies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA, JD, or MST.
