We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our team at the City of Hermosa Beach. Key Responsibilities- Assist in the planning, designing, and preliminary studying of various public works projects, including streets, sewers, parking lots, and storm drains.
- Perform various project management functions, including evaluating bids, negotiating terms, developing project timelines and schedules, and conducting job walks.
- Assist in tracking the progress and work of consultants and contractors.
- Monitor budget and exercise cost control for assigned design and construction projects.
- Prepare quantity and cost estimates for construction projects.
- Prepare legal descriptions, computations, maps, and other information.
- Check construction site drainage and excavation plans and review designs submitted for consistency with codes, ordinances, specifications, and practices of the City.
- Confer with other employees and representatives of governmental agencies, public utilities, and contractors to obtain information and to coordinate contract requirements.
- Prepare a variety of engineering reports, studies, and technical documentation.
- Maintain engineering files and may function as departmental representative at various meetings.
- Conduct field inspections for public works projects for conformance with specifications and standards.
- Identify problems and recommend solutions.
- Respond to questions and inquiries from the general public, property owners, developers, architects, surveyors, contractors, and City staff regarding engineering and development projects.
- Knowledge of basic operations, services, and activities of a municipal engineering design and construction program.
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the construction of various public works projects.
- Knowledge of modern construction projects, materials, and equipment; basic principles and practices of project management and administration.
- Knowledge of legal implications and code requirements that will affect a project.
- Knowledge of applicable safety and health regulations and City rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic methods and techniques of engineering plan review and analysis.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet applications, and specialized engineering software programs.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety standards.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.
- Ability to perform professional engineering duties involved in the design, development, and construction management of a variety of capital improvement projects.
- Ability to serve as the project manager on one or more Capital Improvement Projects.
- Ability to prepare, review, interpret, analyze, and modify engineering plans, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and engineering reports for conformance to professional standards and approved budgets.
- Ability to perform engineering computations and make recommendations for the solution of engineering problems.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise administrative and technical reports; respond to questions and inquiries from a variety of sources regarding engineering and development projects.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering or closely related field and two years of increasingly responsible engineering experience.
License/CertificatesPossession of a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained during the course of employment. EIT Certificate highly desirable.
