In this position, you will be responsible for:
The Orthopaedic Casting Specialist collaborates closely with Orthopaedic surgeons, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, and other healthcare professionals. The main duty of the Orthopaedic Casting Specialist is to accurately measure, fit, and provide braces, casts, and splints as instructed by the physician. This role involves explaining treatment protocols, researching technical details related to bracing, ensuring thorough documentation for proper billing, and managing inventory effectively. Additionally, you will assist Medical Assistants and other support personnel in preparing patient rooms and performing any other tasks deemed necessary by your supervisor to enhance clinic operations and deliver exceptional customer service.
Core Responsibilities:
- Apply and remove casts, splints, and durable medical equipment (DME) as prescribed by the physician and supplied by the DME/Casting department.
- Educate patients on the care, hygiene, and restrictions associated with their casts and splints during the recovery phase.
- Provide patients with guidance on the proper use and maintenance of durable medical equipment, ensuring comfort and optimal performance.
- Assemble, maintain, and adjust orthopedic devices and equipment, including plaster traps and cast saws.
- Keep precise and comprehensive patient records, including those related to cast/DME clinic patients, treatment plans, and progress notes, while adhering to HIPAA regulations to maintain confidentiality.
- Respond to patient inquiries via phone or voicemail regarding any concerns or issues related to casts, splints, or devices.
- Remain accessible to all physician clinics for casting/DME inquiries, particularly in locations with associated surgery centers and urgent care facilities.
- Collaborate with Medical Assistants in clinics as necessary, assisting with the removal of staples, sutures, and pins, as well as applying or removing dressings.
- Support X-ray and clinical staff in assisting patients.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the cast room by ensuring all treatment surfaces are disinfected after each patient visit and upholding the overall appearance of the treatment area.
- Order, receive, organize, and maintain the inventory of cast/splint, DME, and medical supplies daily.
- Participate in departmental training sessions and staff meetings.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures established by Orthopaedic Solutions Management.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to meet the expectations of both internal and external customers by providing excellent service.
- Capability to work independently as well as under the guidance of the DME manager/supervisor.
- Enjoyment of teamwork and collaboration.
- BLS certification is required within 90 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a plus.
