Position Overview

Bronx Charter School for the Arts (Bronx Arts) is a K-8 public institution established in 2002, situated in the South Bronx. We believe that a comprehensive and dynamic exposure to the arts is essential for the academic and social development of all students, serving as a transformative force that fosters lifelong engagement in education.

ROLE SUMMARY

BRONX ARTS is in search of a Middle School Music Educator who will be instrumental in cultivating a positive educational environment. This role involves collaboration with parents, students, and external educational consultants to uphold the high standards we set for our scholars. The educator will leverage their understanding of child development to facilitate the social, emotional, and cognitive growth of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a sequential, age-appropriate, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant music curriculum for students in grades six through eight.
  • Enhance students' musical knowledge and skills through instrumental (band), choral, and general music education.
  • Develop and utilize assessment rubrics to monitor and document student learning and progress.
  • Collaboratively plan and prepare students for a minimum of two annual performances.
  • Engage with community and cultural organizations to provide students with opportunities to connect with industry professionals and explore career paths in music.
  • Maintain classroom order by enforcing school policies and regulations.
  • Integrate dance with academic content where appropriate to enrich learning experiences.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate students with diverse learning needs.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere by applying Responsive Classroom practices.
  • Establish and nurture strong relationships with students and their families.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, collaborative planning sessions, and professional development activities, including an annual summer institute.
  • Take full responsibility for student progress and work diligently to address any challenges.
  • Exhibit professionalism in terms of punctuality, attendance, and integrity.
  • Seek constructive feedback from leadership and peers to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or Music; a Master's degree and NYS Teaching certification in a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to foster a classroom environment where students feel secure, supported, and intellectually challenged.
  • Commitment to teaching in underserved communities and addressing the achievement gap.
  • Strong motivation to set and achieve ambitious educational goals.
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork abilities.
  • Growth mindset with a willingness to utilize feedback for professional improvement.
  • Experience teaching in underserved areas is advantageous.
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience is preferred.
