Chief Social Worker Opportunity at Maimonides Medical Center

Maimonides Medical Center, a leading healthcare system in Brooklyn, is seeking an experienced Chief Social Worker to lead our team of dedicated professionals. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for providing clinical supervision, training, and administrative oversight to our Social Work discipline staff and students.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited school, a minimum of 8 years of experience in a psychiatric setting, and a proven track record of leadership and administrative skills. You will be responsible for providing direct services, including assessment and treatment, and assisting with discharge planning for clinically complicated cases.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide ongoing clinical supervision and training opportunities for unit staff to ensure the provision of appropriate patient services and required skills.
  • Be responsible for administrative functions of the Utilization Management and Inpatient Social Work services, ensuring that service operations are in compliance with standards.
  • Provide direct treatment services to patients utilizing modalities such as individual, group, family, and crisis intervention.
  • Perform psychodynamic assessments and formulate diagnostic impressions and recommendations for treatment.
  • Provide case management services for assigned caseload to ensure treatment plan is being followed and assist patients in accessing health, mental health, supportive, and concrete services.
  • Select, hire, and supervise program staff, initiate disciplinary action, and carry out annual performance appraisal of employees.
  • Orient and train new employees in departmental operations.
  • Develop discharge care plans and actively participate in effecting the plans.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary diagnostic and treatment planning conferences and make recommendations regarding the needs of the patient.
  • Provide consultative services to the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Center, and other agency staff regarding appropriate interventions for the patient population.
  • Lead the planning process for developing and implementing the Social Work Student Program to ensure an enriched program and clinical experience is provided for Masters-level Social Work students.
  • Plan, develop, and organize inpatient psychiatry social work services.
  • Ensure staff coordinate with registration and finance to obtain payment for hospital stays.
  • Ensure mandated in-service training by providing conferences, workshops, and other developmental activities to maintain licensure and remain professionally current.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work.
  • Certified as a Certified Social Worker (CSW) for Social Work roles.
  • Minimum of 8 years post-Master's degree in a psychiatric setting with emphasis on the serious and persistent mentally ill.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a clinical supervisor.
  • Minimum of 5 years as an administrative supervisor.
  • Knowledge of behavioral and/or psychodynamic approaches to treatment and assessment.
  • Knowledge of utilization management and working with managed care companies.
  • Psychodiagnostic assessment and diagnostic formulation skills.
  • Treatment skills in individual, group, family, and crisis intervention services.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
