Genetic Counselor

Advantia Health is seeking an experienced Perinatal Genetic Counselor to join our Maternal Fetal Medicine Department. As a key member of our team, you will provide genetic counseling for preconception, routine prenatal, and high-risk indications. You will have opportunities to contribute to outreach programs, in-services to referring providers, presentations to professional and community groups, family practice resident training, program development, and quality improvement.
Responsibilities- Provide specialty perinatal genetic consultation to patients and their families.
- Serve as a resource to healthcare staff, including physicians and other primary care providers.
- Discuss prognosis and management options with patients and their families, explaining disease signs and symptoms, probability of recurrence, prognosis, diagnostic options and procedures, alternate courses of action, and available options.
- Coordinate patient care with other healthcare providers, arranging specialized consultations in tertiary care centers and other referrals as indicated by individual patient needs.
- Counsel on full range of available prenatal genetic testing, such as aneuploidy screening, targeted and expanded carrier screening, recurrent pregnancy loss work up, and diagnostic testing options of CVS and amniocentesis.
- Obtain consent for indicated procedures, compile complete family history/pedigree, obtain and review medical records, assess risk of genetic disease, and assist with grief and crisis counseling resources to individuals and/or families.
- Provide follow-up patient care post-genetic testing with referrals as appropriate for specialty services.
- Document care provided in the medical record.
- Participate in partnerships, projects, and strategic planning involving genetics across Advantia Health.
- Provide community outreach and education, and public policy advocacy in the field of perinatal genetics.
- May perform duties to assure compliance with requirements.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: Master's Degree from an accredited Genetic Counseling Program.
- Experience: 2+ years in perinatal genetic counseling is preferred; experience in perinatal/Maternal Fetal Medicine is preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications: licensed in Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
