Role Overview: We are seeking a dynamic Senior Polymer Applications Specialist to enhance our Applications Development Team. In this role, you will spearhead the application development of Covia's industrial minerals within the polymers sector through innovative formulation design, thorough evaluation, and active customer engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the investigation of new application developments for Covia's industrial minerals in the polymers sector, collaborating closely with mineral specialists to create value-added solutions for end-users.
  • Drive innovation projects from concept to commercialization, focusing on the technical aspects.
  • Work collaboratively across functions including sales, marketing, operations, and project management to ensure a smooth transition of projects through the stage-gate process.
  • Provide training and technical support to various functions as necessary.
  • Assist the platform director in developing an intellectual property strategy in the polymers domain, conducting annual IP landscape studies, and staying informed about competitive IP.
  • Support existing polymer customers by coordinating comparative testing and evaluation of competitive products, serving as a resource for technical support and problem resolution.
  • Oversee the design, installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of the Polymers laboratory.
  • Supervise laboratory technicians, ensuring a safe working environment and implementing 5S standards.
  • Represent Covia at industry forums and conferences, showcasing expertise in specific application areas.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry with a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience, or a Master’s/Ph.D. degree with 5 years of industrial experience.
  • Proven expertise in various thermoplastic polymer systems (such as polyolefin, PVC, TPE) is essential; experience with elastomers is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience in polymer compounding, extrusion, blown film, sheets, and/or injection molding.
  • Strong industry connections with polymer suppliers, compounders, and converters.
  • In-depth understanding of structure-property relationships concerning paints, coatings, and polymer formulations involving pigments, fillers, curing agents, and activators.
  • Proficient in executing analytical/laboratory procedures and maintaining relevant equipment/systems, with familiarity in ASTM procedures/protocols.
  • Experience in project management and the stage-gate process is preferred.
