Primary Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership:
    • Oversee and guide a team of chemists and laboratory technicians in performing chemical evaluations of ores, concentrates, and various materials.
    • Ensure that all laboratory operations are executed safely, efficiently, and accurately.
    • Provide mentorship and training to junior staff, promoting a culture of ongoing improvement and professional growth.
  • Method Development and Validation:
    • Create, validate, and implement analytical techniques for the quantification and characterization of elements and compounds pertinent to mining operations.
    • Ensure compliance of all methods with industry standards and regulatory mandates.
    • Address and resolve analytical challenges, maintaining high standards of accuracy and precision.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Establish and uphold quality control (QC) protocols to ensure the reliability and accuracy of all analytical outcomes.
    • Conduct regular QC assessments, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments.
    • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory functions.
  • Data Interpretation and Reporting:
    • Analyze and interpret intricate data sets, delivering precise and timely reports to support operational decision-making.
    • Collaborate with mining engineers, geologists, and other stakeholders to provide insights and recommendations based on analytical findings.
    • Maintain meticulous records of all laboratory activities, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
    • Ensure adherence to all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations.
    • Implement and enforce laboratory safety protocols, conducting regular safety audits and training sessions.
    • Stay informed on industry best practices and regulatory updates, adjusting laboratory processes as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related discipline; a Ph.D. is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience in an analytical chemistry capacity, ideally within the mining or mineral processing sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and validating analytical methods for complex matrices.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities, with experience managing a team of chemists or laboratory technicians.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proficient in laboratory instrumentation, including ICP-OES, AAS, XRF, and other relevant techniques.
  • Familiarity with quality control and assurance practices, including ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
