Job Title: Behavior Support Specialist

Position Summary/Purpose: The behavior support specialist functions as a district-wide expert who collaborates closely with educational leaders, providing essential positive behavioral instructional support for district personnel at the Tier 1 level. This strategic initiative equips educators and social workers with the necessary tools and expertise to identify students in distress and implement targeted interventions to address their needs effectively. By utilizing insights and guidance, our district establishes a consistent and comprehensive support framework that spans from individual students to entire school buildings and across the district. This role also addresses the critical need for student wellness and nurturing learning environments. The behavior support specialist is responsible for crisis intervention as well as individual and group intervention services that support mental health challenges for students, school staff, and families. District 83 is dedicated to implementing programs aimed at enhancing social-emotional learning practices, supported by the expertise of a Tier 1 behavior specialist.
Role and Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Professional Development: Conducting training sessions and workshops on positive behavior management strategies, including classroom organization, effective communication, and behavior intervention techniques.
- Classroom teachers
- Special area teachers, Special education teachers, paraprofessionals, service providers
- Lunch/Recess monitors
- Bus Drivers
- Support Staff
Creating Classroom Management Plans: Working with teachers to develop classroom management strategies and individualized behavior plans for students exhibiting challenging behaviors. These plans outline approaches for promoting positive behaviors and addressing issues as they arise.
Modeling Strategies: Demonstrating effective behavior management techniques in the classroom, such as positive reinforcement, proactive discipline, and de-escalation strategies.
Resource Provision: Supplying educators with resources, including books, articles, and online tools, to enhance their understanding and management of behavior issues.
Data Collection and Analysis: Assisting educators in gathering and analyzing data on student behavior to identify patterns, triggers, and progress towards behavior goals. Collaborating with Differentiation Specialists and grade-level teams for data analysis.
Collaboration with Other Professionals: Partnering with other professionals, such as school counselors, psychologists, and special education teachers, to develop comprehensive support plans for students with complex behavioral needs. This collaboration occurs during professional learning communities, student intervention team meetings, and faculty meetings.
Building a Positive School Culture: Collaborating with educators to foster a positive and supportive school culture through initiatives such as school-wide behavior expectations, recognition programs, and community-building activities.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Illinois Professional Educator License with School Support Personnel endorsement in School Social Work or Licensed Professional Counselor
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- Bilingual candidates are preferred but not required for this position.
Environmental Conditions: Indoor climate-controlled office environment.
