Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team at Curry Health Network. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory testing, while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in a laboratory environment, optimizing patient safety and minimizing medical/healthcare errors.
  • Verify questionable results or samples and repeat procedures as necessary.
  • Function in all areas of the clinical laboratory, including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, and urinalysis.
  • Perform routine phlebotomy services as needed.
Essential Functions
  1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results accurately and efficiently.
  2. Keep work areas clean and orderly.
  3. Adhere to laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures, documenting all quality control testing, maintenance, and calibration performed.
  4. Document all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  5. Serve as a technical resource by participating in staff training, answering questions from other professionals, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  6. Identify and communicate abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse, and reporting mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials.
  7. Maintain medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, and verifying receipt of supplies.
  8. Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.
  9. Maintain patient confidentiality by keeping laboratory information confidential.
  10. Serve and protect the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
  11. Enhance laboratory services and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Minimum Job Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology/laboratory science or chemical, physical, biological science, with ASCP or AMT certification.
  • Experience in an acute patient care environment.

You will also need:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to successfully and positively interact with providers and employees at all levels throughout the organization and the public.
  • The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens.
  • The ability to commute between 3 campuses in Brookings, Gold Beach, and Port Orford.
  • A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
  • The skills required to implement quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
Physical Requirements

This role requires:

  • Standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, using hands to finger/handle or feel, pushing/pulling, stooping/kneeling, crouch/crawling, reaching with hands and arms.
  • Lifting weights of up to 10 pounds and up to 25 pounds.
  • Close, color, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This role also requires exposure to:

  • Wet, humid conditions (non-weather), fumes or airborne particles, and moderate noise levels.
