Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Peer Support Services: Offer one-on-one and group support to consumers, providing a safe and non-judgmental space for them to share their experiences and challenges.
  • Advocate for Consumers: Serve as a patient/client/consumer advocate, ensuring that their rights and needs are respected and met.
  • Participate in Treatment Team Activities: Collaborate with treatment teams to develop and implement individualized treatment plans that address the unique needs of each consumer.
  • Lead Recovery Dialogues: Facilitate recovery dialogues and self-help sessions with consumers, promoting a culture of recovery and empowerment.
  • Monitor Consumer Support Services: Participate in monitoring consumer support services and programs, ensuring that they are meeting the needs of consumers.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Serious Mental Illness: Possess a working knowledge of the nature of serious mental illness, including self-help techniques and strategies for successful community living.
  • Knowledge of Consumers' Rights: Understand consumers' rights, including agency and federal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Crisis Intervention Protocol: Be familiar with crisis intervention protocol and able to respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of Peer Individual and Group Therapy Techniques: Possess knowledge of peer individual and group therapy techniques, including observation, recording, and reporting on consumer functioning.
Competencies
  • Communication: Possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with consumers, families, and treatment teams.
  • Accountability/Responsibility: Demonstrate a strong sense of accountability and responsibility, ensuring that consumer needs are met and treatment plans are implemented effectively.
  • Cooperation/Teamwork: Collaborate with treatment teams and other stakeholders to ensure that consumer needs are met and treatment plans are implemented effectively.
  • Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service, ensuring that consumers receive high-quality support and services.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in advocacy or advisory or governance.
  • Continuous Year as a Current or Former Recipient of Treatment: Have completed a continuous year as a current or former recipient of treatment, including mental health/substance abuse treatment or diagnosis.
  • Eligibility for Certification as Peer Specialist: Be eligible for certification as a Peer Specialist by the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
Work Environment

This role operates in a variable business setting with trips into the community. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand, or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance, and stoop. Employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Must have the ability to sit for long periods at a computer. Employee frequently uses fine hand/eye coordination, hearing, and visual acuity. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are not hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Employee must be able to travel between Gateway sites.
